When cancer needs what's non-essential

Nature Cell Biology, 2017
The non-essential amino acids serine and glycine are critical for proliferative metabolism. A study in Nature now finds that dietary serine and glycine deprivation inhibits growth of some tumours. Whether this dietary intervention is effective depends on both the oncogenic context and tumour tissue of origin.

Dimension on non-essential submodules

Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, 2019
In this paper, we introduce and study the concepts of non-essential Krull dimension and non-essential Noetherian dimension of an [Formula: see text]-module, where [Formula: see text] is an arbitrary associative ring. These dimensions are ordinal numbers and extend the notion of Krull dimension.

Endogenous viral genes are non-essential in the chicken

Nature, 1979
DNA sequences homologous to the genomes of type C retroviruses are widespread among vertebrates. Ten genetic loci containing endogenous viral DNA sequences have been documented in the white Leghorn chicken alone. Six of these genetic loci are associated with the production of virus or of viral proteins in embryonic fibroblasts (refs 2--4, and S.M.A., L,

Brain areas essential or non-essential for emesis

Brain Research, 1994
This study was undertaken to better delineate those brain regions that are either essential or non-essential for vomiting. Fictive vomiting, identified by a characteristic pattern of respiratory nerve discharge, was induced by a combination of emetic drugs and electrical stimulation of abdominal vagal afferents in decerebrate, paralyzed cats.

Non-essential contribution of LRRC8A to volume regulation

Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology, 2016
Volume regulation is an essential property of any living cell and needs to be tightly controlled. While different types of K(+) channels have been found to participate in the regulation of cell volume, the newly identified volume-regulated anion channel (VRAC) LRRC8 has been claimed to be essential for volume regulation.

An Essential Integral Domain with a Non-Essential Localization

Canadian Journal of Mathematics, 1981
An integral domain D is said to be an essential domain if D is an intersection of valuation rings that are localizations of D. D is called a v-multiplication ring if the finite divisorial ideals of D form a group. Griffin has shown [2, pp. 717-718] that every v-multiplication ring is an essential domain, and that an essential domain having a defining ...
