Immature Neutrophil Phenotype and Enhanced Myeloperoxidase in Male Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease and Cardiovascular Comorbidity

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have an increased cardiovascular risk. Impact of Simultaneous Initiation of Finerenone and Empagliflozin on Albuminuria Irrespective of Baseline HbA1c Levels: A Participant‐Level Exploratory Analysis of the Randomised CONFIDENCE Trial

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 9, Page 7964-7973, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Aims This prespecified analysis evaluated whether the safety and efficacy of finerenone and a sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) combination vary by baseline glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Materials and Methods Adults with type 2 diabetes and a urinary albumin‐to‐creatinine ratio (UACR) of 100 − < 5000 mg/g, estimated glomerular ...

Anti‐inflammatory agents in atherosclerosis—and a need for reform: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence

open access: yesJournal of Internal Medicine, Volume 300, Issue 3, Page 258-283, September 2026.
Abstract Since 1858, human atherosclerotic plaques have been shown to contain immune cells. But are these cells suitable therapeutic targets? Dozens of clinical trials of anti‐inflammatory agents other than colchicine have been performed in patients with clinically evident atherosclerosis.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 16, Issue 8, Page 1550-1562, August 2026.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.
