Environmental Contaminant Accumulation in Freshwater Turtles Inhabiting Three Rivers of the Permian Basin, New Mexico, USA

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Freshwater turtles are valuable sentinels of aquatic systems due to their long lifespans and resilience in environments impacted by contaminants. The Permian Basin, dominated by the oil and gas sector, spans western Texas and southeastern New Mexico, USA, including the Pecos River and its tributaries, the Delaware and Black Rivers.

Assessing physiological, behavioral and movement responses to Suprelorin implant delivery methods in free‐ranging eastern grey kangaroos Macropus giganteus

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Overabundant populations of eastern grey kangaroos Macropus giganteus in peri‐urban areas pose ecological and social challenges. Current management strategies are often hindered by animal welfare and logistical concerns. This study aimed to assess stress responses of kangaroos to two contraceptive delivery methods.

Delisting the Northern Rocky Mountain gray wolf from the US Endangered Species Act: an assessment of political discourse over 20 years

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Feared, revered, and politicized, wolves have long captured human imagination, and ignited fierce conservation conflicts. In the United States, the Endangered Species Act protects species at risk of extinction from human impacts. This far‐reaching legislation, which impacts development and state‐level wildlife management, has been fraught with legal ...

Behavioral response of moose Alces alces to summer heat stress

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Minnesota moose are heat‐stressed during summers, which is adversely impacting their survival. We used both movement and activity data to explore the behavioral responses of Minnesota moose experiencing heat stress, termed ‘hot moose events' or HMEs, to understand how both ambient temperature and available habitat contribute to the ability of these ...

Wildlife management in the United States – thoughts on evolving to better address species overabundance and disease transmission

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
Management options and actions are important for responsibly working to keep populations of sometimes overabundant species of invasive and native wildlife at levels that keep damage (e.g., agricultural, environmental, human health and safety) and disease (e.g., species specific, shared with livestock, zoonotic) associated with them at acceptable levels.

Decision‐centered systems for the future of wildlife conservation

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
This paper defines decision‐centered systems that align institutions, organizations, and science around explicit wildlife conservation decisions, so knowledge needs are decision‐driven, evidence informs analysis, and success is judged by conservation outcomes.

Conceptual overview of the diverse roles of modern zoos. Established roles are shown in black and new or emerging roles in green, while entertainment (red) represents a historically established but increasingly criticized role. ABSTRACT Traditionally, the roles of zoos have been summarised in the ‘4‐Pillar Framework’ comprising Conservation, Education,

Apex predators exploit advantageous snow conditions across hunting modes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Advantageous snow conditions—in terms of snow depth and density—are among the most important features of the winter landscape for two apex predators, regardless of hunting strategy. In a warming climate, the knock‐on effects of a diminishing snowpack may reduce the hunting success of multiple large carnivore species.
