Vaccination in pediatric transplantation—General recommendations. A position paper by the European Reference Network TransplantChild

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, EarlyView.
Abstract Infectious diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among pediatric transplant recipients, despite significant advances in transplantation management. Vaccination is the most effective strategy to prevent infections; however, its efficacy is hindered in solid organ transplant (SOT) and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT)

Lateral Mucosal Flap With Steroid‐Eluting Implant in Revision Draf Type III Frontal Sinus Surgery

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This technical note introduces a novel endoscopic strategy that integrates a laterally based endonasal mucosal flap with a bioabsorbable steroid‐eluting implant to prevent restenosis following revision of Draf type III frontal sinus surgery. The vascularized flap is stabilized and maintained in close apposition to the underlying bone by a self ...

Increased Pediatric Head and Neck Abscesses Following the COVID‐19 Pandemic

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This study evaluated the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on pediatric head and neck abscesses at two tertiary care centers. Overall head and neck abscess incidence increased more than threefold in the post‐pandemic period compared with the pre‐pandemic period, with increases observed across all major abscess subtypes.

Epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae diseases in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, 2010–2015

open access: yesInternational Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2017
Introduction: North American indigenous populations experience a high burden of invasive bacterial infections. Because Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae have multiple antigenic variants, the existing vaccines cannot prevent all cases ...

Aerosolization inhalation of non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae outer membrane vesicles contributing to neutrophilic asthma

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2023
BackgroundNeutrophilic asthma is poorly responsive to corticosteroids, and the mechanism underlying its pathogenesis remains unclear. Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is the most common bacterium found in induced sputum from patients with ...

Structural Insights Into the Function of Leishmania major Adenylosuccinate Lyase

open access: yesProteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT One of several intriguing aspects of kinetoplastid biochemistry is the complete dependence on host purines and purine recycling due to the lack of a de novo purine biosynthesis pathway. Adenylosuccinate lyase (ASL, EC 4.3.2.2) is a key enzyme in the purine synthesis pathway responsible for the conversion of adenylosuccinate into adenosine ...

Mathematical model comparisons of potential non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae vaccine effects [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Theoretical Biology, 2007
Vaccines to prevent acute otitis media (AOM) caused by non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) are under development. Because NTHi is highly variable and colonization rates are high, special vaccine characteristics and trial designs might be needed.

Iron Physiology and Its Impact on Atopic Diseases: An EAACI Taskforce Report

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Iron is essential for oxygen transport, energy metabolism, and immune regulation. Yet iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient disorder across all age groups, affecting nearly one quarter of the global population. Iron deficiency triggers nutritional immunity, a host defense mechanism that withholds and redistributes iron, contributing

An epidemiological study of Haemophilus influenzae at a Brazilian day care center

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2001
Day care centers are a relatively new phenomenon in Brazil that bring together large numbers of young children susceptible to contagious diseases. Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) is an important infection in the age range of those attending day care centers.

Characterization of Serotypes and Molecular Drug Resistance Patterns of Haemophilus influenzae in Kunming Children

open access: yesPolish Journal of Microbiology, 2023
The present study aimed to determine the capsular serotype distribution and antimicrobial drug resistance patterns of Haemophilus influenzae from children in the Kunming region of China. This information could guide policymakers in clinical treatment. In
