Performance of noninvasive ventilation algorithms on ICU ventilators during pressure support: a clinical study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Objective: To evaluate the impact of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) algorithms available on intensive care unit ventilators on the incidence of patient-ventilator asynchrony in patients receiving NIV for acute respiratory failure.

Age‐related differences in cardiogenic shock secondary to Takotsubo syndrome

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
In this multicenter study of 408 patients with cardiogenic shock secondary to Takotsubo syndrome (CS‐TTS), age emerged as a major determinant of clinical profile and prognosis, along with SCAI shock stage. Younger patients presented with more atypical features and received more intensive support but had better short‐ and long‐term outcomes.

Automatic adjustment of noninvasive pressure support with abilevel home ventilator in patients with acute respiratory failure: afeasibility study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Objective: To test the feasibility of applying noninvasive ventilation (NIV) using aprototype algorithm implemented in abilevel ventilation device designed to adjust pressure support (PS) to maintain aclinician-set alveolar ventilation in patients with ...

Effect of General Anesthesia on Liver and Spleen Stiffness for Predicting High‐Risk Varices in Biliary Atresia

open access: yesHepatology Research, EarlyView.
In children with biliary atresia (BA), breath‐holding during liver and spleen stiffness (LS and SS) measurement is often difficult, raising concerns about measurement reliability in the awake state. We investigated whether performing LS and SS measurements under general anesthesia—when brief ventilation pauses are possible—could improve diagnostic ...

Noninvasive Ventilation: Challenges and Pitfalls

open access: yesEuropean Medical Journal Respiratory, 2018
Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is frequently used in patients with acute respiratory failure and its success is dependent on the underlying cause of the condition. When used for cases with a more rapid, reversible nature, like cardiogenic pulmonary oedema

Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) improves patient-ventilator interaction during non-invasive ventilation delivered by face mask [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose: To determine if, compared to pressure support (PS), neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) reduces patient-ventilator asynchrony in intensive care patients undergoing noninvasive ventilation with an oronasal face mask.

Catheter Ablation: Evolution and Efficiencies

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The present review includes a discussion the goals and pitfalls of efficiency in the medical profession, a historical perspective on the evolution of catheter ablation in the field of electrophysiology (EP), and the data regarding the relationship between efficiency and outcomes in the EP lab. Focus on efficacy is critical to maximize resource

Restoring Functional Status: A Long-Term Case Report of Severe Lung and Ventilatory Muscle Pump Dysfunction Involving Recurrent Bacterial Pneumonias [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background and Purpose: Prolonged mechanical ventilation contributes to immobility and deconditioning making efforts to safely discontinue ventilator support desirable. This case report documents how implementing physical therapy treatment interventions,
