Nonlinear photonic crystals: III. Cubic nonlinearity
Waves in Random Media, 2003Summary: Weakly nonlinear interactions between wavepackets in a lossless periodic dielectric medium are studied based on the classical Maxwell equations with a cubic nonlinearity. We consider nonlinear processes such that: (i) the amplitude of the wave component due to the nonlinearity does not exceed the amplitude of its linear component; (ii) the ...

Nonlinear photonic crystals: I. Quadratic nonlinearity
Waves in Random Media, 2001Summary: We develop a consistent mathematical theory of weakly nonlinear periodic dielectric media for the dimensions one, two and three. The theory is based on the Maxwell equations with classical quadratic and cubic constitutive relations. In particular, we give a complete classification of different nonlinear interactions between Floquet-Bloch modes

2003 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe 2003) (IEEE Cat. No.03TH8666), 2004
In this paper, we describe a theoretical approach by which we can qualitatively and quantitatively determine the nonlinear optical properties of a photonic crystals. We start by accurately characterizing the linear properties of the structure, using a recently developed multigrid method to efficiently compute the photonic bandstructure and Bloch ...

Functionalizing nonlinear crystals
2013 Conference on Lasers & Electro-Optics Europe & International Quantum Electronics Conference CLEO EUROPE/IQEC, 2013The most efficient nonlinear interaction in quasi phase-matched crystals occurs in periodic crystals when the interacting beams are Gaussian beams. The generated beams can be then routed, filtered or shaped by various elements - mirrors, lenses, pinholes, gratings, spatial light modulators, etc. In order to save space and cost, it is desired to combine

Nonlinear Čerenkov Radiation in Nonlinear Photonic Crystal Waveguides
Physical Review Letters, 2008We study nonlinear Cerenkov radiation generated from a nonlinear photonic crystal waveguide where the nonlinear susceptibility tensor is modulated by the ferroelectric domain. Nonlinear polarization driven by an incident light field may emit coherently harmonic waves at new frequencies along the direction of Cerenkov angles.

Tunable nonlinear liquid-crystal photonic crystals
The 15th Annual Meeting of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, 2003Summary form only given. Nematic liquid crystals (NLC) possess very broadband (400 nm to 20 /spl mu/m) birefringence and transparency, and extraordinarily large optical nonlinearity. In this paper, we report a novel approach of directly writing permanent (but electrically switchable) 2-D holographic gratings on pure liquid crystalline structures ...

Nonlinear frequency conversion in 2D ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ photonic crystals is theoretically studied. Such a crystal has a 2D periodic nonlinear susceptibility, and a linear susceptibility which is a function of the frequency, but constant in space.
