Nonlinear elasticity in nanostructured materials

Reports on Progress in Physics, 2011
We elaborate on a blended continuum/atomistic theoretical picture of the nonlinear elastic properties of nanostructured materials, looking at diverse aspects such as dispersions of inhomogeneities within a matrix, random or graded nanograined materials, two-dimensional atomic sheets.

Nonlinear Elasticity of Granular Media

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1997
The finite and incremental elasticity of a random packing of identical spheres is derived using energy methods. We consider different models for the contact forces between spheres, all of which are based upon or related to the fundamental Hertz theory; we consider only the special cases of perfect friction (no tangential slip) or no tangential friction.

Nonlinear Theory of Elastic Surfaces

Journal of Mathematical Physics, 1966
The present paper develops a nonlinear theory for the deformation of an elastic surface by assuming the existence of a strain energy function and postulating a principle of virtual work which governs its mechanical behavior. By considering the strain energy function to depend on the first- and second-order deformation gradients, the field equations and

Effective elastic constants in nonlinear elasticity

Journal of Applied Physics, 2005
The Lagrangian elastic constants cIJ and cIJK which are given in data-books are not stress-strain relationships. The relationships between them and any experimental observables are far from straightforward to evaluate under conditions of finite deformation when elasticity is nonlinear.

Nonlinear Elastic Shell Theory

1983
The aim of this monograph is to unify, simplify and extend a number of results that have appeared in the last 20 years in the field of nonlinear-shell-theories. Authors adopt a mixed approach by using integral equations of motion and thermodynamics of a three-dimensional body taken over its reference shape.

On nonlinear universal relations in nonlinear elasticity

Zeitschrift für angewandte Mathematik und Physik, 2006
In the theory of nonlinear elasticity universal relations are relationships connecting the components of stress and deformation tensors that hold independently of the constitutive equation for the considered class (or sub-class) of materials. They are classified as linear or nonlinear according as the components of the stress appear linearly or ...

Existence Theorems in Nonlinear Elasticity

1986
Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the existence theorems in nonlinear elasticity. Following the existence theory in nonlinear elasticity, one is interested in minimizing, on a fixed class of functions. The chapter fixes a boundary condition, natural in the context of nonlinear elasticity.
