Two states of the body are considered. One is called the initial state (this usually means the unstressed body state), while the other is the actual state, that is the stressed body state. Note that from a geometrical point of view this is a conditional definition; however, it becomes important when physical relations are considered.

Nonlinear Micropolar Elasticity
1974The Cosserat continuum is a material continuum with “points” which may rotate independently of the displacements. A better interpretation of this continuum is offered through the assignment of rigid triads of vectors to the points, and admitting the triads to rotate independently of the points of the medium.

For many years, a standard treatise on elasticity has been the book by Love (1927). Another standard text on linear elasticity has been prepared by Timoshenko and Goodier (1970), which first appeared in 1934. Among other books on nonlinear elasticity, we mention those by Novozhilov (1948) and Fung (1965).

Existence Theorems in Nonlinear Elasticity
1986Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the existence theorems in nonlinear elasticity. Following the existence theory in nonlinear elasticity, one is interested in minimizing, on a fixed class of functions. The chapter fixes a boundary condition, natural in the context of nonlinear elasticity.
