Advanced control of non‐isothermal axial dispersion tubular reactors with recycle‐induced state delay

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract We develop a delay‐aware estimation and control framework for a non‐isothermal axial dispersion tubular reactor modelled as a coupled parabolic‐hyperbolic PDE system with recycle‐induced state delay. The infinite‐dimensional dynamics are preserved without spatial discretization by representing the delay as a transport PDE and adopting a late ...

A probabilistic approach to Dirichlet problems of semilinear elliptic PDEs with singular coefficients

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper, we prove that there exists a unique solution to the Dirichlet boundary value problem for a general class of semilinear second order elliptic partial differential equations. Our approach is probabilistic.

Playing with fire? A mean‐field game analysis of fire sales and systemic risk under regulatory capital constraints

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Statistics, EarlyView.
Abstract We analyze the effect of regulatory capital constraints on financial stability in a large homogeneous banking system using a mean‐field game (MFG) model. Each bank holds cash and a tradable risky asset. Banks choose absolutely continuous trading rates in order to maximize expected terminal equity, with trades subject to transaction costs ...

Existence of Gevrey approximate solutions for certain systems of linear vector fields applied to involutive systems of first-order nonlinear pdes

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 2011
The authors consider a \(G^s\)-involutive structure of rank \(n\) in a manifold of dimension \(m+n\). In local coordinates: \[ L_j= \partial/\partial t_j+ \sum^m_{k=1} a_{jk}(x, t)\partial/\partial x_k,\quad j= 1,\dots, n, \] where \(a_{jk}\) belong to the Gevrey space \(G^s\), \(s> 1\), and \([L_i,L_j]= 0\) for \(0\leq i\), \(j\leq n\).

Advection‐Pressure Splitting Schemes Applied to a Non‐Conservative 1D Blood Flow Model With Transport for Arteries and Veins

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, EarlyView.
We introduce new efficient and accurate first order finite volume‐type numerical schemes, for the non‐conservative one‐dimensional blood flow equations with transport, taking into account different velocity profiles. The framework is the flux‐vector splitting approach of Toro and Vázquez‐Cendón (2012), that splits the system in two subsystems of PDEs ...

Nonlinear observer design for a first order hyperbolic PDE: application to the estimation of the temperature in parabolic solar collectors**Research reported in this publication has been supported by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

open access: yesIFAC-PapersOnLine, 2016
In this paper, the problem of estimating the distributed profile of the temperature along the tube of a concentrated distributed solar collector from boundary measurements is addressed. A nonlinear observer is proposed based on a nonlinear integral transformation.

On Integrable Doebner-Goldin Equations

open access: yes, 1995
We suggest a method for integrating sub-families of a family of nonlinear {\sc Schr\"odinger} equations proposed by {\sc H.-D.~Doebner} and {\sc G.A.~Goldin} in the 1+1 dimensional case which have exceptional {\sc Lie} symmetries.

Impact of Uncertain Parameters on Navier–Stokes Equations With Heat Transfer via Polynomial Chaos Expansion

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, EarlyView.
This study investigates the impact of uncertain parameters on Navier–Stokes equations coupled with heat transfer using the Intrusive Polynomial Chaos Method (IPCM). Sensitivity equations are formulated for key input parameters, such as viscosity and thermal diffusivity, and solved numerically using the Finite Element‐Volume method.

Direct Numerical Simulation of Magnetohydrodynamic Slip‐Flow Past a Stretching Surface Using Physics‐Informed Neural Network

open access: yesHeat Transfer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Traditional numerical methods, such as finite difference methods (FDM), finite element methods (FEM), and spectral methods, often face meshing challenges and high computational cost for solving nonlinear coupled differential equations. Machine learning techniques, specifically Physics‐informed machine learning, address these obstacles by ...

Dynamic Optimal Control of a One-Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic System With Bilinear Actuation

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
The manipulation of the magnetic field has been a proven effective method to change the flow velocity in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) flow systems. In this paper, we consider a novel bilinear magnetic control problem arising in a 1-D MHD flow system ...
