The Generation of Nonlinear Internal Waves [PDF]

open access: yesOceanography, 2012
Nonlinear internal waves are found in many parts of the world ocean. Their widespread distribution is a result of their origin in the barotropic tide and in the variety of ways they can be generated, including by lee waves, tidal beams, resonance, plumes,

Nonlinear Coupling Between Whistler‐Mode Chorus and Electron Cyclotron Harmonic Waves in the Magnetosphere

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
Electromagnetic whistler‐mode chorus and electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves can contribute significantly to auroral electron precipitation and radiation belt electron acceleration.

The Effect of Random Wind Forcing in the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

open access: yesFluids, 2019
The influence of a strong and gusty wind field on ocean waves is investigated. How the random wind affects solitary waves is analyzed in order to obtain insights about wave generation by randomly time varying wind forcing.

Orbital Stability of Solitary Waves for Generalized Symmetric Regularized-Long-Wave Equations with Two Nonlinear Terms

open access: yesJournal of Applied Mathematics, 2014
This paper investigates the orbital stability of solitary waves for the generalized symmetric regularized-long-wave equations with two nonlinear terms and analyzes the influence of the interaction between two nonlinear terms on the orbital stability ...

Nonlinear Stationary Plasma Waves

open access: yesJournal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1962
Nonlinear stationary electron plasma waves are investigated in one-dimensional case. Full account is taken of the effects of both kinds of electrons which are trapped and untrapped in potential troughs. A condition for the existence of plasma waves which is periodic in space is obtained in the case that the amplitudes are sufficiently small.

Models for strongly-nonlinear evolution of long internal waves in a two-layer stratification [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 2007
Models describing the evolution of long internal waves are proposed that are based on different polynomial approximations of the exact expression for the phase speed of uni-directional, fully-nonlinear, infinitely-long waves in the two-layer model of a ...
