Worlds of knowing and nonmonotonic reasoning

IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, 1989
The project of formalizing nonmonotonic reasoning on the basis of historical and contemporary philosophical reflections on reasoning and knowing is examined. Some paradigmatic accounts of the prospects of formalizing reasoning, from the ancient beginnings of western epistemology up to contemporary debate about the reasonableness of scientific ...

Nonmonotonic reasoning as prioritized argumentation

IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, 2001
This paper proposes a formalism for nonmonotonic reasoning based on prioritized argumentation. We argue that nonmonotonic reasoning in general can be viewed as selecting monotonic inferences by a simple notion of priority among inference rules. More importantly, these types of constrained inferences can be specified in a knowledge representation ...

Nonmonotonic reasoning and logic programming

Knowledge-Based Systems, 1990
Inference methods in knowledge-based systems are presented which are used for inferencing from incomplete information or in systems that model actions, i.e. systems that describe a time-varying world. In such cases, one is faced with nonmonotonic types of derivation when new information can lead to a revision of some statements accepted earlier.

Experience Based Nonmonotonic Reasoning

2013
Within everyday reasoning we often use argumentation patterns that employ the rather vague notion of something being normally true. This form of reasoning is usually captured using Reiter's Default Logic. However, in Default Logic one has to make explicit the rules which are to be used for reasoning and which are supposed to be normally true. This is a

Nonmonotonic reasoning and logic programs

2005
The present paper is concerned with a unifying approach to non-monotonic reasoning in clause logic programming. An outline of a general theory of non-monotonic reasoning is given that is aimed at a foundation of this area. Typical results are presented in the frame of this theory and problems related to logic programming are discussed.

Formalizing nonmonotonic reasoning systems

Artificial Intelligence, 1987
The paper addresses the problem of existence of expansions of semi-normal default theories introduced by \textit{R. Reiter} [ibid. 13, 81-132 (1980; Zbl 0435.68069)]. Semi-normal default theory \(\Delta\) is defined as (D,W), where W is a set of first-order formulae, and D is a set of semi- normal defaults, i.e. rules of inference having the form: (*)\

A commonsense theory of nonmonotonic reasoning

1986
A commonsense theory of nonmonotonic reasoning is presented which models our intuitive ability to reason about defaults. The concepts of this theory do not involve mathematical fixed points, but instead are explicitly defined in a monotonic modal quantificational logic which captures the modal notion of logical truth.
