Factors and Experiences Associated With Unscheduled Hospital Readmission After Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Case–Controlled Study

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 17, Issue 5, Page 1389-1396, May 2025.
The research utilized a case–control approach to contrast patients experiencing unscheduled readmissions with those undergoing planned readmissions due to staged surgery. Findings indicated a 3.88% rate of unscheduled readmissions, mainly linked to adjacent segment disease, with 3.35% necessitating reoperation.

Weaponizing Kinship: A Demographic Analysis of Bereavement in the Colombian Conflict

open access: yesPopulation and Development Review, EarlyView.
Abstract The ongoing Colombian armed conflict has produced widespread homicides and enforced disappearances, as armed actors used violence to terrorize communities and consolidate power. Family bereavement—one of the most pervasive and enduring consequences of this violence—remains critically understudied from a quantitative perspective.

The DeepJoint Algorithm: An Innovative Approach for Studying the Longitudinal Evolution of Quantitative Mammographic Density and Its Association With Screen‐Detected Breast Cancer Risk

open access: yesBiometrical Journal, Volume 68, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT High mammographic density is a well‐known risk factor for breast cancer and reduces the sensitivity of mammography‐based screening. While automated machine and deep learning‐based methods provide more consistent and precise measurements compared to subjective Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI‐RADS) assessments, they often fail to ...

From Pressure Patterns to Personalized Insoles: A Systematic Review of Demographic Influences on Plantar Pressure

open access: yesJournal of Foot and Ankle Research, Volume 19, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Plantar pressure distribution is a widely used biomechanical measure for characterizing foot–ground loading during gait in research and clinical assessment. Demographic variables, such as sex, age, and body weight, influence plantar loading patterns; however, findings across studies have been inconsistent, limiting direct clinical ...

Quality Assessment and Predictive Modeling of Chickpea, Lentil and Camelina Yield: Effects of Nitrogen, Irrigation, Rainfed Conditions, and Intercropping Using Machine Learning Approaches

open access: yesLegume Science, Volume 8, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Given increasing water scarcity, the need to reduce chemical inputs, and the growing demand for nutritionally valuable vegetable oils, identifying sustainable cropping systems for camelina production has become increasingly important. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of nitrogen application, irrigation regimes (irrigated and ...

Advancing Canning Quality in Common Beans: An Integrated Farm‐to‐Can Framework Combining Breeding, Processing, and Artificial Intelligence

open access: yesLegume Science, Volume 8, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are essential raw material for the canning industry. This article reviews recent advances in assessing canning quality and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into breeding methodologies aimed at developing genotypes with superior yield and canning‐quality traits.

In for a penny: An empirical study of earthquake experience and non‐pharmaceutical intervention effectiveness in the Marche region

open access: yesAnnals of Public and Cooperative Economics, Volume 97, Issue 2, Page 469-501, June 2026.
Abstract This study investigates whether prior exposure to natural disasters influenced individual compliance with non‐pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), specifically lockdown measures, during the Corona Virus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic. Focusing on the Marche region of Italy, which experienced a severe earthquake in 2016, we exploit

Controlling 3D Contractility via Engineered Fibrous Hydrogel Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 36, 4 May 2026.
A tunable composite contractile assembly (CCA) is developed that can permit or resist contraction without changing cell‐adhesion and density, unlike collagen whose inherent coupling of these ECM cues limits its use as a platform in contractility studies.

4‐Hydroxybenzyl Alcohol Mitigates Hyperlipidemia‐Associated Depression by Inhibiting Neuroinflammation via the NKIRAS2/NF‐κB Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 27, 13 May 2026.
4‐HBA upregulates NKIRAS2 levels, inhibiting the activation of the NF‐κB pathway and subsequently reducing the levels of neuroinflammatory markers. This modulation helps restore normal mood and behavior in hyperlipidemic conditions, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for managing hyperlipidemia‐associated depression.
