Nonpenetrating Subclavian Artery Injuries

Nonpenetrating subclavian artery trauma, a potentially catastrophic injury, has been recognized more frequently with the liberal use of angiography in evaluating blunt cervicothoracic trauma. Six patients, five men and one woman, recently underwent surgical treatment at the University of Michigan Hospital for blunt injury of the subclavian artery.

Tracheoesophageal Fistula from Nonpenetrating Trauma

A patient with a tracheoesophageal fistula from blunt chest trauma is presented and the literature is reviewed. A common pathophysiologic factor is the involvement of a young male in a deceleration injury. Early surgical intervention with division of the fistula and repair of the tracheal and esophageal defects is recommended.

Nonpenetrating Injuries of the Abdomen

During 1956 it is estimated that 9,450,000 persons were injured in accidents in this country. The National Safety Council does not estimate the number of abdominal injuries. Among 2,000,000 disabling compensation injuries, 27% involved the trunk, and the abdominal injuries might make up one-third of these.
