Factors associated with failure of humerus nonunion surgery in patients with initial nonoperative management

open access: yesOTA International
. Objectives:. To describe operative results after humerus nonunion surgery in patients whose initial humerus shaft fracture (OTA/AO code 12) was treated nonoperatively and to identify risk factors of nonunion surgery failure in the same population ...

Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound and Halo Immobilization Is an Effective Treatment for Nonunion Following Traumatic Spondylolisthesis of the Axis

open access: yesJournal of Neurological Surgery Reports, 2017
This case report describes a unique case involving traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis that resulted in nonunion, angulation, and displacement after conservative treatment with a cervical collar, but which was successfully achieved union with halo ...

Femoral neck nonunion: new classification used in total hip arthroplasty in elderly patients

open access: yesГений oртопедии, 2022
Introduction The risk of the femoral neck fracture nonunion is 48 % with avascular necrosis of the femoral head being reported in 42 % of cases. There are many classifications of acute intra-articular fractures of the proximal femur and there are no ...

The Contributing Factors of Nonunion Bone Fractures: A Brief Review

open access: yesJournal of Orthopedic and Spine Trauma, 2022
The skeletal system has a high healing capacity. A nonunion fracture occurs when the natural course of bone healing is impaired. Numerous local and systemic factors participate in the development of a nonunion fracture.

Exploring the causal relationship of gut microbiota in nonunion: a Mendelian randomization analysis mediated by immune cell

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
BackgroundEmerging research indicates that gut microbiota (GM) are pivotal in the regulation of immune-mediated bone diseases. Nonunion, a bone metabolic disorder, has an unclear causal relationship with GM and immune cells.

Early Radiographic Outcomes of Vascularized Pedicle Bone Grafting in Foot: A Case Series

open access: yesJournal of Reconstructive Microsurgery Open, 2022
Background Navicular nonunion and talar avascular necrosis may result from limited blood supply predisposing to injury and impaired healing. Vascularized pedicled bone grafting is a promising adjunct to treat these challenging conditions, offering the ...

Conditioned Media from Mechanically Stimulated Macrophages Upregulate Osteogenic Genes in Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Bone fracture healing is a complex, timely orchestrated scenario involving multiple cell types and a plethora of cytokines and regulatory factors. To gain further insight, an in vitro model to a) study macrophage polarization under mechanical load in a fibrin hydrogel and b) subsequently assess the effect of conditioned media derived from macrophages ...

Ultrasound‐Mediated Biotransfection of Engineered Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Treated Bone Defects through Intracellular Cavitation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ultrasound‐mediated biotransfection through intracellular cavitation increases plasmid nuclear translocation and gene transfection efficiency by 284.7% and 131.6% in engineered bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) compared to traditional ultrasound‐targeted microbubble destruction techniques. The maintained bone morphogenetic protein 2 expression

Biodegradable Zinc‐Based Alloys for Guided Bone Regeneration Membranes: Feasibility, Current Status, and Future Prospects

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Recent research has shown that biodegradable metals based on zinc (Zn) may be used as guided bone regeneration (GBR) membrane materials. This study examines their viability from the standpoints of material science and biology, reports on the state of research on Zn‐based GBR membranes, and suggests specific development plans based on the potential and ...

Biocompatibility and healing patterns in experimentally induced canine tibial fractures using Pedicle screw‐Rod external fixation

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that using a Pedicle screw‐Rod configuration for the external fixation of non‐articular tibial osteotomy aligns well with the principles of biological osteosynthesis, resulting in secondary bone healing characterized by callus formation and neovascularization.
