Normal fault interactions in seismic cycles and the impact of fault network geometry

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth
Understanding the mechanisms behind the characteristics of earthquake cycles on normal faults is challenging due to their long recurrence times. Despite their moderate magnitude, normal faulting earthquakes can produce considerable damage. We investigate the effects of fault network geometry and spacing on the seismic cycle of a system of two normal ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Stima della potenza dissipata per attrito durante i terremoti: confronto tra faglie sperimentali e naturali. = Estimate of frictional seismic power dissipation from natural and experimental faults. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In the last decades, several approaches were applied to understand the physics of seismic faulting. In the field, the recognition of pseudotachylytes (solidified friction melts produced during seismic slip) which record seismic ruptures along a fault ...

Mechanism of fault activation induced by mining in the upper and lower plates of the normal fault and the grouting reinforcement technology

open access: yes工程科学与技术
Objective As a common geological structure in coal mine safety production activities, the fault has a high degree of internal fracture development, poor rock mass integrity and low mechanical strength.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Normal fault growth and fault zone architecture of normal faults exposed in the Corinth Canal, central Greece

open access: yes, 2016
The Corinth Canal in central Greece consists of an excellent natural transect across a population of normal faults. This study presents a structural analysis of 23 exposed faults, focusing on fault geometry, fault zone architecture and the structural evolution of the Corinth Canal.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.
