Defining Normativity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This paper investigates whether different philosophers’ claims about “normativity” are about the same subject or (as recently argued by Derek Parfit) theorists who appear to disagree are really using the term with different meanings, in order to cast ...

Animal Normativity

open access: yesPhenomenology and Mind, 2020
Many philosophers think that human animals are the only normative creatures. In this paper, I will not provide reasons against such a claim, but I will engage in a related task: delineating and comparing two deflationary accounts of what non-human animal

Norms2: Norms About Norms [PDF]

open access: yesErkenntnis, 2021
AbstractIn this paper, I outline and defend the view that variations in compliance levels with one and the same norm represent differentnorms about following norms. In support of this claim, I first argue that classic game-theoretic accounts, which define norms as Nash equilibria of noncooperative games, typically consider variations in compliance ...

Spin norm and Lambda norm

open access: yesCommunications in Algebra, 2023
Given a $K$-type $π$, it is known that its spin norm (due to first-named author) is lower bounded by its lambda norm (due to Vogan). That is, $\|π\|_{\rm spin}\geq \|π\|_{\rm lambda}$. This note aims to describe for which $π$ one can actually have equality. We apply the result to tempered Dirac series.

Explaining norms and norms explained [PDF]

open access: yesBehavioral and Brain Sciences, 2009
AbstractOaksford & Chater (O&C) aim to provide teleological explanations of behavior by giving an appropriate normative standard: Bayesian inference. We argue that there is no uncontroversial independent justification for the normativity of Bayesian inference, and that O&C fail to satisfy a necessary condition for teleological explanations:

Preschoolers Understand the Moral Dimension of Factual Claims

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2018
Research on children’s developing moral cognition has mostly focused on their evaluation of, and reasoning about, others’ intrinsically harmful (non-)verbal actions (e.g., hitting, lying). But assertions may have morally relevant (intended or unintended)

Propositions as (non-linguistic) objects and philosophy of law: Norms-as-propositions [PDF]

open access: yesFilozofija i Društvo, 2020
The paper distinguishes two accounts of legal normativity. One-source accounts claim there is only one source for legal normativity, which is ultimately linguistic.

Normalität als Grundphänomen des Lebens. Versuch einer phänomenologischen Annäherung [PDF]

open access: yesPhainomena
Normality as a Fundamental Phenomenon of Life. An Attempt at a Phenomenological Approach - - - In the present article, we attempt to show that Husserl’s notion of life should be characterized by an inherent normativity at every level.

The Normativity of Institutions

open access: yesPhenomenology and Mind, 2016
Some philosophers have claimed that normativity is an essential feature of social institutions, and have identified the source of normativity in collective intentionality.
