Spin norm and Lambda norm

open access: yesCommunications in Algebra, 2023
Given a $K$-type $π$, it is known that its spin norm (due to first-named author) is lower bounded by its lambda norm (due to Vogan). That is, $\|π\|_{\rm spin}\geq \|π\|_{\rm lambda}$. This note aims to describe for which $π$ one can actually have equality. We apply the result to tempered Dirac series.

Norms2: Norms About Norms [PDF]

open access: yesErkenntnis, 2021
AbstractIn this paper, I outline and defend the view that variations in compliance levels with one and the same norm represent differentnorms about following norms. In support of this claim, I first argue that classic game-theoretic accounts, which define norms as Nash equilibria of noncooperative games, typically consider variations in compliance ...

Explaining norms and norms explained [PDF]

open access: yesBehavioral and Brain Sciences, 2009
AbstractOaksford & Chater (O&C) aim to provide teleological explanations of behavior by giving an appropriate normative standard: Bayesian inference. We argue that there is no uncontroversial independent justification for the normativity of Bayesian inference, and that O&C fail to satisfy a necessary condition for teleological explanations:

Normalität als Grundphänomen des Lebens. Versuch einer phänomenologischen Annäherung [PDF]

open access: yesPhainomena
Normality as a Fundamental Phenomenon of Life. An Attempt at a Phenomenological Approach - - - In the present article, we attempt to show that Husserl’s notion of life should be characterized by an inherent normativity at every level.

Polynomial Norms [PDF]

open access: yesSIAM Journal on Optimization, 2019
In this paper, we study polynomial norms, i.e. norms that are the $d^{\text{th}}$ root of a degree-$d$ homogeneous polynomial $f$. We first show that a necessary and sufficient condition for $f^{1/d}$ to be a norm is for $f$ to be strictly convex, or equivalently, convex and positive definite.

The Normativity of Institutions

open access: yesPhenomenology and Mind, 2016
Some philosophers have claimed that normativity is an essential feature of social institutions, and have identified the source of normativity in collective intentionality.

Normativity of Scientific Laws (II): Aspects of Implicit Normativity

open access: yesProblemos, 2018
[full article, abstract in English; only abstract in Lithuanian] In Normativity of Scientific Laws (I) (Mets 2018) explicit and implicit normativities were discerned and it was shown, following Joseph Rouse, that scientific laws implicitly harbour ...

Normativity of Scientific Laws (I): Two Kinds of Normativity

open access: yesProblemos, 2018
[full article, abstract in English; only abstract in Lithuanian] This article presents the results of a broader research project which aims to argue for the normativity of scientific laws.

Care, Social Practices and Normativity. Inner Struggle versus Panglossian Rule-Following

open access: yesPhenomenology and Mind, 2020
Contrary to the popular assumption that linguistically mediated social practices constitute the normativity of action (Kiverstein and Rietveld, 2015; Rietveld, 2008a,b; Rietveld and Kiverstein, 2014), I argue that it is affective care for oneself and ...
