Reduced erythropoietin response to anaemia in elderly patients with normocytic anaemia
European Journal of Haematology, 1992Abstract: We studied the effect of age on the relationship between haemoglobin and serum erythropoietin (EPO) levels in anaemic patients. 568 patients over 70 years of age were compared with 137 patients under 70 and a reference group of 144 patients of all ages with proven iron deficiency. EPO was measured using a radioimmunoassay.

REDUCED GLUTATHIONE CONTENT OF RETICULOCYTES AND NORMOCYTES
1964Abstract : The results indicate that the high content of reduced glutathione constitutes a characteristic of the reticulocyte, while the still young but no longer reticulated red blood corpuscles reveal a glutathione content which does not differ from that found in the mature erythrocyte.

Estimation of reticulocyte and polychromatophil counts has shown that only 28.7-44.9 percent of blood reticulocytes and 61.7 percent of bone marrow reticulocytes are polychromatophilic. Polychromatophil count is approximately equal to the sum of classes I and II reticulocytes.

Improved approach to patients with normocytic anemia.
American family physician, 1988A precise cause for normocytic anemia can be determined through applied pathophysiology. Examination of the peripheral blood smear may yield evidence of renal disease, liver disease, hemolysis or megaloblastic anemia. A reticulocyte count is performed next; then the creatinine clearance is determined.
