A new scale‐selective measure of curvature for meteorological fields

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We introduce a novel diagnostic called curvature using radial variation (CURV) that quantifies the local cyclonic or anticyclonic curvature of mean‐sea‐level pressure or geopotential height gridded fields over selected scales. A depiction of how CURV values relate to differing cyclonic curvature is shown in the figure.

Enhanced North Pacific subtropical gyre circulation during the late Holocene

open access: yes, 2021
The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre circulation redistributes heat from the Western Pacific Warm Pool towards the mid- to high-latitude North Pacific. However, the driving mechanisms of this circulation and how it changed over the Holocene remain poorly ...

Freshwater hydrology emerges as the strongest predictor of phenological variability in a Southeast Alaska steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) population

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Phenological variation, such as the migration trends of salmonids, may provide resilience in changing environmental scenarios, influencing individual survival and population productivity. Phenological shifts may be particularly consequential for anadromous species that rely on seasonal cues for migration between freshwater and marine habitats ...

Summer snow extent heralding of the winter North Atlantic Oscillation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
[1] Winter climate over the North Atlantic and European sector is modulated by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). We find that the summer extent of snow cover over northern North America and northern Eurasia is linked significantly (p < 0.01) to the ...

Small-Scale Features in the ΔfCO2 Distributions Along the TN413 Cruise Track in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre and Equatorial Pacific

open access: yes, 2023
Rising atmospheric CO2 levels are contributing to widespread changes in the global ocean carbon budget. Long-term trends on the air-sea flux of CO2 have demonstrated that the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSTG) is a net sink of CO2, whereas the ...

Mixtures of Neural Network Experts With Application to Phytoplankton Flow Cytometry Data

open access: yesEnvironmetrics, Volume 37, Issue 7, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Flow cytometry is a valuable technique that measures the optical properties of particles at a single‐cell resolution. When deployed in the ocean, flow cytometry allows oceanographers to study different types of photosynthetic microbes called phytoplankton.

Transition of Glacial Regimes Recorded at IODP Site U1524 in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, Over the Last 800 Thousand Years

open access: yesPaleoceanography and Paleoclimatology, Volume 41, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Reconstructing past interactions between the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and changing environmental conditions in the Ross Sea region can help determine long‐term WAIS stability. Existing sedimentary records reveal changes to oceanography, sea ice and ice sheet extent over the glacial‐interglacial cycles of the last ∼800 kyr.

North pacific gyre oscillation synchronizes climate fluctuations in the eastern and western boundary systems

open access: yes, 2008
Recent studies have identified the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO) as a decadal mode of climate variability that is linked to previously unexplained fluctuations of salinity, nutrient, and chlorophyll in the Northeast Pacific.

A DRP‐4DVar‐Based Coupled Data Assimilation System With a Simplified Off‐Line Localization Technique for Decadal Predictions

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
A new weakly coupled data assimilation (CDA) system based on the dimension‐reduced projection four‐dimensional variational data assimilation (DRP‐4DVar) with a simplified off‐line localization technique and a fully coupled model, i.e., the Grid‐point ...

Deciphering the Link Between Modeling Errors and the North Atlantic Surface Warming Pattern Projected by CMIP5 and CMIP6 Models

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract The North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre (NASG) has warmed much less than the global ocean over recent decades, thereby suggesting a human‐caused slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This North Atlantic “warming hole” is also found in climate projections, yet with a model‐dependent timing, location and intensity. Here we
