Abstract Natural decadal variability often obscures anthropogenic trends in ocean deoxygenation. Using a global observational oxygen reconstruction (1965–2022), we investigate the role of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) in modulating decadal oxygen variability.

On the role of climate modes in modulating the air–sea CO2 fluxes in eastern boundary upwelling systems [PDF]
The air–sea CO2 fluxes in eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUSs) vary strongly in time and space, with some of the highest flux densities globally. The processes controlling this variability have not yet been investigated consistently across all four

Abstract Understanding how the vertical structure of marine heatwaves (MHWs) influences ecosystems remains limited. Here we investigated subsurface‐intensified (Type‐1) and surface (Type‐2) MHWs in tropical oceans using reanalysis data sets. Type‐1 MHWs occur most frequently and are concentrated near the equator, with a threefold greater median ...

Temporal variations in English Populations of a forest insect pest, the green spruce aphid (Elatobium abietinum), associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation and global warming [PDF]
Based on an exceptionally long modern ecological dataset (41 years), it has been possible to show that warm weather in England associated with a positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index causes the spring migration of the green spruce aphid ...

Variability of water masses and circulation in the subtropical North Atlantic [PDF]
Observations of interannual variability in 18 Water (Talley and Raymer 1982) and Gulf Stream transport (Worthington 1977) motivate an ocean model sensitivity study. The North Atlantic circulation is simulated with a three-dimensional isopycnic coordinate

Among the largest fish species, the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is found circumglobally in temperate and tropical waters. Though historical documents have recorded their presence in the California Current Ecosystem (CCE), basking sharks are now ...

Abstract Understanding the coastal zone of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS), where it interacts with the Southern Ocean and warmer air masses, is crucial for predicting Antarctica's influence on the global climate and sea level. This region has multiple tipping mechanisms that could trigger large, rapid, and potentially irreversible changes in the AIS ...

Abstract Future projections of oxygen and water mass age change in the upper Pacific Ocean show a consistent pattern: strong deoxygenation and increased age in the well‐ventilated subtropical gyres, contrasted by weak deoxygenation and younger age in the poorly ventilated tropical oxygen minimum zones.
