Increase in anthropogenic mercury in marginal sea sediments of the Northwest Pacific Ocean

open access: yesScience of The Total Environment, 2019
Over the past century, the addition of anthropogenic mercury (HgANTH) to vast areas of North Pacific marginal seas adjacent to the northeast Asian continent has tripled. Analysis of sediment cores showed that the rate of HgANTH addition (HgANTH flux) was greatest in the East China and Yellow Seas (9.1 μg m-2 yr-1) in the vicinity of China (the source ...

Simulation and Analysis of Ocean Wave in the Northwest Pacific Ocean

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012
In order to obtain more accurate results than the traditional method of wave statistics, the third-generation ocean wave model WAVEWATCH III (WW3) is applied to simulate the sea wave field of the Northwest Pacific. The model is driven by the QSCAT/NCEP blended winds. Then wave parameters are analyzed by statistical analysis method. The comparison of the

CRYPTIC DIVERSITY IN PLANKTIC FORAMINIFERA IN THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC OCEAN

The Journal of Foraminiferal Research, 2009
Recent molecular studies show multiple cases of cryptic diversification in planktic foraminifera; however, the geographic distribution of the cryptic species is poorly known. Herein, we present the first insight into the cryptic diversity of planktic foraminifera from Northwest Pacific samples.

Deep circulation in the northwest corner of the Pacific Ocean

Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 2001
Abstract We deployed for two years a line of nine current-meter moorings bearing instruments at depths of 2, 3, and 4 km running southeast of Hokkaido, to measure currents above the continental slope, Kuril Trench, and Hokkaido Rise. The mean flow was directed southwestward above the continental slope, northeastward above the trench and upper rise ...

Intraplate Seamounts of the Northwest Sector of the Pacific Ocean

Oceanology, 2018
A method is proposed for identifying seamounts in the northwest sector of the Pacific based on the following criteria: a closed, close to isometric contour of the isobaths at the base of a structure, its quasi-conical shape, and angles of slope exceeding 5° within the limits of the closed contour.

Oceanic rainfall off the Pacific Northwest Coast

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1973
Rainfall within 55 km of the northwest coast of the United States was measured from a buoy and estimated from weather reports at lightships. Results show that precipitation at sea was only about one half to one third of that found at coastal land stations.

NANOOS contributions to understanding ocean acidification in the Pacific Northwest

OCEANS 2010 MTS/IEEE SEATTLE, 2010
NANOOS is coordinating a regional effort to observe the status of ocean acidification in the coastal waters and estuaries of Washington and Oregon. There is strong partnership in this effort between federal and university scientists, as well as strong interest from shellfish growers, tribes, and other stakeholders in the region.

NANOOS partnerships for assessing ocean acidification in the Pacific Northwest

2012 Oceans, 2012
Ocean acidification has serious implications for the economy and ecology of the Pacific Northwest United States. A combination of factors renders the Pacific coast and coastal estuaries particularly vulnerable to acidified water. The Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems, NANOOS, the Regional Association of the United States ...

Fukushima-derived radiocesium in the waters of the Northwest Pacific Ocean in the winter of 2011

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2022
To understand the transport of Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident (FDNPPA)-derived nuclear contaminated water, which will be discharged into the Pacific Ocean in the future, the distributions of 134Cs and 137Cs in seawater in the public areas east of Japan in winter 2011 were reported in this study. The ranges of 134Cs and 137Cs activities
