NANOOS partnerships for assessing ocean acidification in the Pacific Northwest

2012 Oceans, 2012
Ocean acidification has serious implications for the economy and ecology of the Pacific Northwest United States. A combination of factors renders the Pacific coast and coastal estuaries particularly vulnerable to acidified water. The Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems, NANOOS, the Regional Association of the United States ...

Deep circulation in the northwest corner of the Pacific Ocean

Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 2001
Abstract We deployed for two years a line of nine current-meter moorings bearing instruments at depths of 2, 3, and 4 km running southeast of Hokkaido, to measure currents above the continental slope, Kuril Trench, and Hokkaido Rise. The mean flow was directed southwestward above the continental slope, northeastward above the trench and upper rise ...

Relationship between cadmium and phosphate in the northwest Pacific Ocean

Journal of the Oceanographical Society of Japan, 1985
The relationship between Cd and PO4 in the Kuroshio and Oyashio regions and the Okhotsk Sea was examined. The resultant equations are as follows: Cd (ng l−1)=37.0 PO4 (μM)+2.6; Cd(ng l−1)=32.1 PO4 (μM)+1.2 and Cd (ng l−1)=34.1 PO4 (μM)+7.9, respectively.

MERCURY DISTRIBUTION IN THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC OCEAN NEAR JAPAN ISLANDS

Chemistry Letters, 1981
Abstract Mercury in the seawater collected from the Northwest Pacific Ocean was determined by a sensitive mercury analyzer set on the shipboard, where the mercury resonance line at 185.0 nm was used for atomic absorption measurement. The horizontal and vertical distributions of mercury will be reported in this communication.

Intraplate Seamounts of the Northwest Sector of the Pacific Ocean

Oceanology, 2018
A method is proposed for identifying seamounts in the northwest sector of the Pacific based on the following criteria: a closed, close to isometric contour of the isobaths at the base of a structure, its quasi-conical shape, and angles of slope exceeding 5° within the limits of the closed contour.

Crustal low-velocity zone south of Shatsky Rise, northwest Pacific Ocean

Geo-Marine Letters, 1982
The detailed seismic refraction investigation of the oceanic crust south of Shatsky Rise in the Northwestern Pacific revealed a low velocity zone (LVZ) with an average compressional wave velocity of 6.3 km/s within layer 3. This conclusion is based on the shadow zone for refractions on the travel time curves in their first arrivals from the M ...

Tropical Cyclone Motion in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Phase 1

1991
Abstract : Our program involved observational studies of tropical cyclone cases, numerical simulation of a real-case, numerical studies of the beta drift using a three dimensional model and post-doctoral visitations to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). The principal investigator and post-doctoral researcher each participated in detailed planning

Seismological evidence for the tectonics of the Northwest Pacific Ocean

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1958
Abstract From a series of fault-plane solutions of earthquakes in any one area, it is possible to determine the tectonic displacement of that area by a least squares solution. This method has been applied to the areas marginal to the Northwest Pacific Ocean.
