Form species Nostoc commune (Cyanobacteria). [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2001
The form species concept for the Cyanobacteria was evaluated using a comprehensive set of Nostoc samples that were collected during the past two centuries, from all continents, including regions from the Tropics to the Poles. Phylogenies were constructed based upon the conserved regions of tRNALeu (UAA) group I intron DNA sequences.

Encapsulating ecosystem engineers: alginate beads of biocrusts for restoration efforts

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Introduction Biocrusts are pioneer ecosystem engineers that modify the soil surface by aggregating particles, fixing carbon and nitrogen, and retaining moisture. These functions facilitate the establishment of both cryptogams and vascular plants, making biocrusts increasingly important in ecological restoration.

A molecular investigation of free-living and lichenized Nostoc sp. and symbiotic lifestyle determination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Individual cyanobacterial species can occupy a diversity of symbiotic lifestyles yet how this lifestyle is determined is unknown. In this study we focus on the symbiotic lifestyles of the cyanobacterial genus Nostoc, and define their lifestyle based on ...

Oxylipin formation in Nostoc punctiforme (PCC73102)

open access: yesPhytochemistry, 2007
The dioxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids is mainly catalyzed by members of the lipoxygenase enzyme family in flowering plants and mosses. Lipoxygenase products can be metabolized further and are known as signalling substances that play a role in plant development as well as in plant responses to wounding and pathogen attack.

Mass Spectrometry Imaging of Plant Metabolites Enhanced by Laser Postionization Combined with Matrix‐Free Ultraviolet Laser Desorption/Ionization

open access: yesAnalysis &Sensing, Volume 6, Issue 1, January 2026.
Matrix‐free laser desorption ionization coupled with laser postionization (LDI‐LPI) is shown to significantly improve the sensitivity and coverage of plant metabolites such as glycosylated flavonoids in mass spectrometry imaging experiments. The imaging capabilities are demonstrated by analysis of the floating fern Azolla filiculoides, at high spatial ...
