Notch Effects

2006
Abstract This chapter describes how notches affect the load-carrying capacity and fatigue life of materials under cyclic loads. It explains that stresses and strains can be three to four times higher in the vicinity of a notch, greatly accelerating fatigue damage.

Analysis of the Notch Effect in Fatigue

Journal of ASTM International, 2012
Abstract The fatigue-crack propagation at stress concentrations is a topic of significant importance in a number of engineering applications. Further, it is recognized that the fatigue limit of notched components is dictated by the critical condition for either initiation or propagation of a small crack at the root of a notch.

NOTCH SIZE EFFECT IN FATIGUE

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1989
Abstract— The notch size effect (i.e. the decrease of the notched fatigue limit with increasing notch size for the same stress concentration factor) was quantitatively derived by describing the threshold conditions for the propagation of a short semi‐elliptical crack nucleated at the notch root.

The Biomechanical Effect of Notch Size, Notch Location, and Femur Orientation on Hip Resurfacing Failure

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2013
For hip resurfacing, this is the first biomechanical study to assess anterior and posterior femoral neck notching and femur flexion and extension. Forty-seven artificial femurs were implanted with the Birmingham hip resurfacing (BHR) using a range of notch sizes (0, 2, and 5 mm), notch locations (superior, anterior, and posterior), and femur ...

The effects of notch geometry on fatigue life using notch sensitivity factor

Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals, 2010
The notch sensitivity of a material is a measure of how sensitive a material is to notches or geometric discontinuities. Notch sensitivity is influenced by many parameters such as notch geometry. Three types of notch geometries, V-shape, U-shape and -shape notches of various sizes are considered in this investigation.

Effect of notch on ductile fracture

International Journal of Fracture Mechanics, 1971
The present work is an attempt towards a proper understanding of the fracture mechanics of ductile materials. Experiments were carried out to find the notch ductility of four materials: stainless steel, brass, copper, (all annealed) and mild steel (normalized). The crack propagation takes place when the strain just ahead of the crack reaches a critical

The Prediction of Notch and Crack Effects

Marine Technology and SNAME News, 1966
Historically, engineering structures have been designed for static strength, that is, for the one-time application of a large load. However, service loads, as a rule, are repeated loads, and a rather small load can break a structure if it is repeated very often; this phenomenon is known as the fatigue problem.

Effects of cracks and notches: collapse

1989
In Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM; Chapter 3) as well as in Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics (EPFM; Chapter 4) the analysis of fracture is based on a parameter representing the crack tip stress field; while the quantity used in EPFM is actually the strain energy release rate, this can be shown to be equivalent to a stress field parameter.
