El trabajo con especies forestales nativas en el país se ha centrado, principalmente, al estudio de comunidades boscosas existentes y a su manejo. La posibilidad de utilizar diversas especies de dichas comunidades en forma de bosque artificial ha cobrado relevancia en los últimos años. El género Nothofagus es el más estudiado.
