Antioxidant Defenses in the Kidneys and Heart of the Freshwater Fish Astyanax lacustris Subjected to High (31°C) and Low (15°C) Temperatures

open access: yesCell Biochemistry and Function, Volume 43, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Aquatic ecosystems have their abiotic and biotic factors constantly altered by various factors. Among them, water temperature is an abiotic factor that can significantly affect fish physiology, increasing energy demand, which can impact homeostasis and survival. Endocrine and metabolic changes and enzymatic modulation are referred to as stress

Evolution and Diversification of Antarctic Notothenioid Fishes [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Zoologist, 1991
Synopsis. Antarctica supported fossil ichthyofaunas during the Devonian, Jurassic, Cre? taceous and Eocene/Oligocene. These faunas are not ancestral to each other, nor are they related to any component of the modern fauna. About one hundred species of notothenioids dominate a modern fauna of over 200 species of bottom fishes.

Biophysical characterisation of neuroglobin of the icefish, a natural knockout for hemoglobin and myoglobin. Comparison with human neuroglobin. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The Antarctic icefish Chaenocephalus aceratus lacks the globins common to most vertebrates, hemoglobin and myoglobin, but has retained neuroglobin in the brain. This conserved globin has been cloned, over-expressed and purified. To highlight similarities

Somatic energy content and histological analysis of the gonads in Antarctic fish from the Scotia Arc

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2005
Histological characteristics of the gonads and the energy contents of axial muscle, liver and gonads of Antarctic notothenioid fish collected during the LAMPOS (Latin American Polarstern Study) survey in April 2002 were analysed.

Climate Change Impacts on Antarctic Fish Diversity: A Circumpolar Perspective From eDNA Metabarcoding Assessment

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 7, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Recent climate‐driven changes in the Antarctic marine environment, marked by regional differences between West and East Antarctica, may alter ecosystem dynamics. As key components of the food web, fish might reflect these changes. This study examines fish biodiversity patterns across four typical Antarctic seas by integrating eDNA analysis

Metallothionein in Antarctic notothenioids: Genetic polymorphism and differential gene expression [PDF]

open access: yesItalian Journal of Zoology, 2000
Among Antarctic notothenioids, appreciable amounts of hepatic metallothionein were found in red-blooded species, whilst very little metallothionein, if any, was detected in icefish. In contrast, high levels of metallothionein mRNA were revealed in both fishes by Northern blot analysis of total RNA.

The Axes of Divergence for the Evolutionary Radiation of Notothenioid Fishes in Antarctica

open access: yesDiversity
Notothenioid fishes, a perciform group, radiated in the cold shelf waters around the Antarctic continent and the 110 species dominate fish diversity, abundance, and biomass at levels of ≈77%, 92%, and 91%, respectively.

Linking biogeography to physiology: Evolutionary and acclimatory adjustments of thermal limits

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology, 2005
Temperature-adaptive physiological variation plays important roles in latitudinal biogeographic patterning and in setting vertical distributions along subtidal-to-intertidal gradients in coastal marine ecosystems.

Genomic Signals of Local Adaptation Associated With Environmental Variables in Eleginops maclovinus From Northern Chilean Patagonia

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2025.
Studying evolutionary processes in the unique and understudied Patagonian fjord ecosystem is a challenging task for evolutionary ecologists. Genomic signals of local adaptation are present in a species from northern Chilean Patagonia. Polygenic selection drives local adaptation in Eleginops maclovinus. ABSTRACT Understanding the evolutionary mechanisms

Antarctic teleosts with and without hemoglobin behaviorally mitigate deleterious effects of acute environmental warming.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
Recent studies forecast that many ectothermic animals, especially aquatic stenotherms, may not be able to thrive or even survive predicted climate change.
