The effect of an evolutionary adaptation to low environmental temperature on the development of lymphoid organs was examined in Harpagifer antarcticus from Signy Island (South Orkney Islands; 60 degrees 43'S, 45 degrees 38'W). Thymus, pronephric kidney and spleen were typical, both in position and structural development, of those observed in warmer ...

The considerable differences revealed in the karyotypes of a large number of investigated species (60) from the eight families of the suborder Notothenioidei give the possibility to hypothesize the directions of the karyotype divergence. It is suggested that the process of karyotype specialization probably follows (1) the direction of a varying number ...

Phylogeny of the Channichthyidae (Notothenioidei, Teleostei) Based on Two Mitochondrial Genes
1998The family Channichthyidae contains 11 genera and 15 species [1] and is considered monophyletic [2,3, 4, 5]. Interrelationships of channichthyids were first investigated by Iwami [2] based on morphological characters.

Ontogeny of the thymus in an antarctic teleost, Harpagifer sp. (Notothenioidei: Perciformes)
Polar Biology, 1989The development of the thymus was examined in different stages of Harpagifer sp. from Signy Island (South Orkney Islands; 60°43′S, 45°38′W). The thymus was typical, both in position and structural development, of that observed in warmer-water teleosts. The infiltration of the thymic epithelia was not observed until 4 weeks post-hatch.

An enzymatic parameter was examined with a view to providing a supplementary criterion to individualize separate geographical populations of a single fish species, Disostichus eleginoides (Notothenioidei). An acid phosphatase of specimens fished from the Crozet and Kerguelen islands in February 1982 and February 1983 was studied and compared between ...

Cytogenetic diversity of the Antarctic plunderfishes of the family Artedidraconidae (Notothenioidei)
2010Antarctic plunderfishes (Notothenioidei, Artedidraconidae) are important components of theSouthern Ocean fish fauna. As a contribution to the Victoria Land Transect Project, we performed a cytogenetic analysis of six species from three of the four artedidraconid genera, Artedidraco glareobarbatus, A. orianae, A. skottsbergi, A. shackletoni, Histiodraco
