Passive balancing of the DC bus midpoint for Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) based Voltage Source Converters

IECON 2013 - 39th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2013
This paper presents a passive method to balance the voltage of the split capacitors in Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) based Voltage Source Converters (VSC). The voltage of the two capacitors is equated by connecting a low VA transformer at the AC side of the converter. The transformer is connected in wye configuration and its neutral point is connected to

The balancing properties of DC link compensation for 3-phase Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) Converter

Proceedings of The 7th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference, 2012
One of the major benefits of a three level NPC multilevel converter is that it requires only one DC source. However, the intermediate Neutral Point (NP) voltage of the converter must be maintained midway between the two outer dc-bus voltages, to avoid semiconductor device overvoltage stress and output modulation distortion. Various approaches have been

A Simplified PWM Strategy for a Neutral-Point-Clamped (NPC) Three-Level Converter With Unbalanced DC Links

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2016
A simplified pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy for a neutral-point-clamped three-level converter with unbalanced dc links is proposed in this paper to achieve high-quality line-to-line output voltages and to maximize the linear modulation range. The simplified strategy takes the direct output voltage modulation by calculating the special solutions ...

Research on vector control method of neutral-point-clamped(NPC) three-level inverter with bootstrap driver

2013 Fourth International Conference on Intelligent Control and Information Processing (ICICIP), 2013
Diode neutral-point-clamped(NPC) three-level inverter has more significant characteristics than traditional two-level inverter, such as high utilization rate on voltage of the DC side, low harmonics output, small switching stress etc. There has no mature products of three-level inverter with control system until now.

Neutral Point Clamped Inverter (NPC)

This technical note details the implementation of a closed-loop current control and grid synchronization system for a three-phase, three-wire Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter. Serving as a core subsystem in a fast electric vehicle charging topology with intermediate storage, the grid-tied NPC inverter manages bidirectional power flow between the DC

Managing the DC link neutral potential of the three-phase-four-wire neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter in FACTS application

IECON'99. Conference Proceedings. 25th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (Cat. No.99CH37029), 2003
To compensate for the zero sequence current arising from asymmetrical operation of a transmission line, a neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter with a fourth wire must be employed. The most significant challenge arising from controlling of the four-wire NPC inverter consists in stabilizing the neutral point potential at the DC link middle value.

Experimental verification of direct dead-time Control and DC-link neutral-point balancing of a three level neutral-point-clamped (3L-NPC) VSC

2013 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, 2013
The neutral-point balancing of 3L-NPC converter has been studied in many works in the past. However, all state-of-the-art methods have in common that the information of the energy-flow direction is needed. Recently, Direct Dead-time Control (DDTC) has been presented which controls the converter dead-times to balance the dc-link independent from the ...

Discontinuous PWM Modulation Strategy With Circuit-Level Decoupling Concept of Three-Level Neutral-Point-Clamped (NPC) Inverter

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2013
A new pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is developed and presented in this paper. The proposed PWM scheme not only takes advantage of the special properties available in NPC inverters, but also reduces the switching loss of the ...

Neuro-Computing Vector Classification SVM Schemes to Integrate the Overmodulation Region in Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) Converters

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2007
Three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source converters have recently emerged as important alternatives to conventional two-level converter topologies in high-power medium-voltage energy conversion applications, particularly in high performance ac motor drive systems.

The effect of the three level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter on the core loss of a synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM)

2015 IEEE International Electric Machines & Drives Conference (IEMDC), 2015
The effects of the three level inverter on the core losses of a SynRM are investigated particularly at the stator yoke and tooth. A comparative study on the effects of space vector pulse width modulated (SV-PWM) two and three level inverter on the iron/core loss are analyzed. A SynRM stator made of silicon steel, M36, 0.35 mm thickness is used.
