Suomi-NPP VIIRS lunar radiometric calibration observations

SPIE Proceedings, 2014
Lunar observations by the Suomi-NPP instrument VIIRS help improve our understanding of the radiometric calibration of the reflected solar bands (RSB). The spacecraft performs a scheduled roll maneuver approximately nine times per year to acquire lunar data at nearly constant phase angles.

On-Orbit Characterization of S-NPP VIIRS Transmission Functions

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2015
The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) spacecraft executed a series of yaw maneuvers on February 15 and 16, 2012. Data collected during these maneuvers were used to characterize the transmission functions of the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument solar diffuser (SD) and solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM ...

Detection and validation of dust storm from NPP VIIRS

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
A dust storm detection algorithm for NPP VIIRS data is proposed in this paper. The pixel dataset includes a variety of typical feature types, such as dust over different surface type, thick and thin clouds, vegetation, Gobi, ice/snow, etc. were collected and the distribution of the reflectance and brightness temperature were analyzed, based on which, a

Update on the performance of Suomi-NPP VIIRS lunar calibration

SPIE Proceedings, 2015
Lunar observations have been regularly scheduled for the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite since its launch on October 28th, 2011. In reference to the ROLO irradiance model, the detector gain coefficient or F-factor can be derived from these lunar ...

NPP VIIRS emissive band radiance calibration

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
VIIRS thermal emissive bands (TEB) calibration data (blackbody and space counts) have been analyzed. The analysis results indicate that the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) TEB is stable and exceeds the specification. VIIRS Blackbody temperature is stable, too. The 6 platinum resistance thermometers (PRT) are also stable, except for

Calibration support for NPP VIIRS SDR assessment

SPIE Proceedings, 2010
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is one of the instruments included in the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Preparatory Project (NPP), which is a joint mission between NASA and the NPOESS Integrated Program Office (IPO). The NPP provides a bridge between the current Earth Observing System (

Use of the moon as a calibration reference for NPP VIIRS

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
The Moon has served as a reference for several satellite instruments including SeaWiFS and MODIS, both of which provide design innovations for NPP VIIRS. However, as yet, the Moon is not a formal part of the calibration baseline for NPP VIIRS. In particular, the lunar measurements by the MODIS instruments require on-orbit maneuvers (spacecraft rolls of

Suomi-NPP VIIRS unscheduled lunar observations

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
Lunar observations by the Suomi-NPP instrument VIIRS are scheduled on a nearly monthly basis at a phase angle of approximately -51 degrees. The lunar images acquired during scheduled observations have been used for radiometric calibration stability monitoring of the reflective solar bands, band-to-band registration characterization, modulation transfer

Prelaunch Radiometric Characterization and Calibration of the S-NPP VIIRS Sensor

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2015
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a key instrument onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) spacecraft that was launched on October 28, 2011. VIIRS is designed to provide top of the atmosphere radiometric measurements and imaging of the entire planet Earth twice daily. It is a wide-swath (3040 km) cross-track

Identification of Polycentric Cities in China Based on NPP-VIIRS Nighttime Light Data [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
Nighttime light data play an important role in the research on cities, while the urban centers over a large spatial scale are still far from clearly understood. Aiming at the current challenges in monitoring the spatial structure of cities using nighttime light data, this paper proposes a new method for identifying urban centers for massive cities at ...
