Experimental scaling of compressional Alfvén eigenmode stability
Both co-propagating and counter-propagating compressional Alfvén eigenmodes (CAE) are relatively ubiquitous in NSTX plasmas with toroidal field strengths of ⩽4.65 kG, but are largely absent in the NSTX-U plasmas with toroidal fields of 5.7–5.9 kG.

Conceptual design of a divertor Thomson scattering diagnostic for NSTX-U
A conceptual design for a divertor Thomson scattering (DTS) diagnostic has been developed for the NSTX-U device to operate in parallel with the existing multipoint Thomson scattering system. Higher projected peak heat flux in NSTX-U will necessitate application of advanced magnetics geometries and divertor detachment.

Charged Fusion Product Plasma Diagnostics in Spherical Tokamaks [PDF]
Charged fusion products from the D(d,p)t reaction, protons (p) and tritons (t), can be detected to obtain time and position dependent information on the fusion reaction profile in plasmas heated with neutral particles beams. We have developed a prototype

Optimization of lithium vapor box divertor evaporator location on NSTX-U using SOLPS-ITER
Commercial fusion reactors will be faced with extremely high divertor target heat fluxes that will require mitigation. Simulations of detachment in an NSTX-U scenario projected to have 92 MW m ^−2 unmitigated peak target heat flux are presented, which ...

Three new extreme ultraviolet spectrometers on NSTX-U for impurity monitoring
Three extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrometers have been mounted on the National Spherical Torus Experiment–Upgrade (NSTX-U). All three are flat-field grazing-incidence spectrometers and are dubbed X-ray and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer (XEUS, 8–70 Å), Long-Wavelength Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer (LoWEUS, 190–440 Å), and Metal Monitor and ...

2-D magnetic equilibrium and transport modeling of the X-divertor and super X-divertor for scrape-off layer heat flux mitigation in tokamaks [PDF]
textIntense heat fluxes from the divertor incident on material surfaces represent a “bottleneck” problem for the next generation of tokamaks. Advanced divertors, such as the X-Divertor (XD) and Super X-Divertor (SXD), offer a magnetic solution to the ...

GSPD: An algorithm for time-dependent tokamak equilibria design
One of the common tasks required for designing new plasma pulses or shaping scenarios is to design the desired equilibria using an equilibrium (Grad-Shafranov equation) solver. However, standard equilibrium solvers are time-independent and cannot include

FPGA-based High Performance Diagnostics For Fusion [PDF]
High performance diagnostics are an important aspect of fusion research. Increasing shot-lengths paired with the requirement for higher accuracy and speed make it mandatory to employ new technology to cope with the increasing demands on digitization and ...

Far-infrared tangential interferometer/polarimeter design and installation for NSTX-U
The Far-infrared Tangential Interferometer/Polarimeter (FIReTIP) system has been refurbished and is being reinstalled on the National Spherical Torus Experiment—Upgrade (NSTX-U) to supply real-time line-integrated core electron density measurements for use in the NSTX-U plasma control system (PCS) to facilitate real-time density feedback control of the
