Superdeformed Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yesAnnual Review of Nuclear and Particle Science, 1991
The ever increasing accuracy with which nuclear structure studies can be performed experimentally and theoretically has yielded a wealth of fascinating new results. It is by now well known that throughout the periodic table nuclei can adopt a rich variety of shapes, particularly when rotated.

The nicotinamide hypothesis revisited—plant defense signaling integrating PARP, nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, epigenetics, and glutathione

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nicotinamide (NIC) and nicotinic acid (NIA) are proposed as stress signaling compounds in plants. Oxidative stress may lead to single strand breaks (SSB) in DNA, which activate poly(ADP‐ribose) polymerase (PARP). NIC and NIA are then formed from NAD. NIC and NIA can promote epigenetic changes leading to the expression of defense genes specific for the ...

A simple filtration technique for obtaining purified human chromosomes in suspension

open access: yesBioTechniques, 2014
Here we present a simple method for cleaning polyamine human mitotic chromosomes in solution. This was achieved by filtering intact (unburst) nuclei along with both large and small cytoplasmic debris through a series of different pore sized filters. Pure

Easy collective polarization switching in ferroelectrics

open access: yes, 2000
The actual mechanism of polarization switching in ferroelectrics remains a puzzle for many decades, since the usually estimated barrier for nucleation and growth is insurmountable ("paradox of the coercive field").

A working model for cytoplasmic assembly of H/ACA snoRNPs

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Dyskerin is the component of nuclear H/ACA ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) endowed with pseudouridine synthase catalytic activity. Two isoforms of human dyskerin have been characterized: the abundant Iso1, mainly nuclear, and the shorter Iso3, mainly cytoplasmic but occasionally imported into nuclei.

Onion-shell nuclei on monolayer MoS2 facilitate friction reduction

open access: yesFriction
Monolayer MoS2 has garnered significant interest because of its exceptional optoelectronic and tribological properties and potential application as a lubrication layer in micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems. Although the nanotribological performance

C9orf72 ALS‐causing mutations lead to mislocalization and aggregation of nucleoporin Nup107 into stress granules

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in the C9orf72 gene represent the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Using patient‐derived neurons and C. elegans models, we find that the nucleoporin Nup107 is dysregulated in C9orf72‐associated ALS. Conversely, reducing Nup107 levels mitigates disease‐related changes.

Application of Nuclear Volume Measurements to Comprehend the Cell Cycle in Root-Knot Nematode-Induced Giant Cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2017
Root-knot nematodes induce galls that contain giant-feeding cells harboring multiple enlarged nuclei within the roots of host plants. It is recognized that the cell cycle plays an essential role in the set-up of a peculiar nuclear organization that ...

Relativistic Continuum Hartree Bogoliubov Theory for Ground State Properties of Exotic Nuclei

open access: yes, 2005
The Relativistic Continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory, which properly takes into account the pairing correlation and the coupling to (discretized) continuum via Bogoliubov transformation in a microscopic and self-consistent way, has been reviewed ...

From lactation to malignancy: A comparison between healthy and cancerous breast gland at single‐cell resolution reveals new issues for tumorigenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Single‐cell RNA sequencing reveals an opposite role of SLPI in basal tumors based on metastatic spread, along with shared activation of specific regulons in cancer cells and mature luminal lactocytes, as well as downregulation of MALAT1 and NEAT1 in the latter.
