Rapoport effect in South American Carnivora (Mammalia): null models under geometric and phylogenetic constraints

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
Rapoport effect predicts that species geographic range sizes will increase toward higher latitudes, probably reflecting adaptations to extreme climatic conditions that increase species tolerance.

On perfect fluid models in non-comoving observational spherical coordinates

open access: yes, 2004
We use null spherical (observational) coordinates to describe a class of inhomogeneous cosmological models. The proposed cosmological construction is based on the observer past null cone.

Generalised chiral null models and rotating string backgrounds [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
We consider an extension of a special class of conformal sigma models (`chiral null models') which describe extreme supersymmetric string solutions.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

String Propagation in Bianchi Type I models: Dynamical anisotropy Damping and Consequences [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
A generic ansatz is introduced which provides families of exact solutions to the equations of motion and constraints for null-strings in Bianchi type I cosmological models. This is achieved irrespective of the form of the metric.

Modeling: Neutral, Null, and Baseline [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophy of Science, 2018
Two strategies for using a model as “null” are distinguished.Null modelingevaluates whether a process is causally responsible for a pattern by testing it against a null model.Baseline modelingmeasures the relative significance of various processes responsible for a pattern by detecting deviations from a baseline model.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Lightning network: a second path towards centralisation of the Bitcoin economy

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2020
The Bitcoin lightning network (BLN), a so-called ‘second layer’ payment protocol, was launched in 2018 to scale up the number of transactions between Bitcoin owners.

Spatial averaging and apparent acceleration in inhomogeneous spaces

open access: yes, 2011
As an alternative to dark energy that explains the observed acceleration of the universe, it has been suggested that we may be at the center of an inhomogeneous isotropic universe described by a Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) solution of Einstein's field ...
