Fracture mechanics of volcanic eruptions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Seismology is a key tool in the forecasting of volcanic eruptions. The onset of an eruption is often preceded and accompanied by an increase in local seismic activity, driven by fracturing within the edifice.

Low velocity impact modeling in composite laminates capturing permanent indentation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper deals with impact damage and permanent indentation modeling. A numerical model has been elaborated in order to simulate the different impact damage types developing during low velocity/low energy impact.

Semantic Modeling in Materials Science and Engineering With Platform MaterialDigital Core Ontology 3.0

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The community‐driven Platform MaterialDigital Core Ontology (PMDco) 3.0 is introduced as a Basic Formal Ontology‐aligned semantic backbone for the processing–structure–properties paradigm in Materials Science and Engineering. Modular engineering, automated releases, and validation workflows are highlighted and key semantic patterns for materials ...

Numerical modeling of the fracture process in mode I of concrete beams with known cracking path by means of a discrete model of cohesive crack

open access: yesRevista Ingeniería de Construcción, 2010
This work describes the formulation, implementation and application of a cohesive crack discrete model, which can simulate the fracture process in mode I of simple concrete beams with defined cracking pattern.

Distinct Microstructural Characteristic Lengths Defining Notch Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation, and Defect Tolerance in Advanced Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of modes of microcrack nucleation, growth and temporary arrestment at different boundaries, with the criteria for crack propagation in three scenarios: (1) large notch, (2) defect/small sharp notch, and (3) long crack. This work revisits and integrates results on the fatigue behavior of advanced bainitic steels (in particular ...

Continuum Modeling of Hydraulic Fracturing in Complex Fractured Rock Masses

open access: yes, 2018
In this chapter we present and demonstrate the use of a continuous approach to model hydromechanics and hydraulic fracturing of complex fractured rock masses.

Interference fracturing: Nonuniform distributions of perforation clusters that promote simultaneous growth of multiple hydraulic fractures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
One of the important hurdles in horizontal-well stimulation is the generation of hydraulic fractures (HFs) from all perforation clusters within a given stage, despite the challenges posed by stress shadowing and reservoir variability.

3D geological modeling of strongly heterogeneous dual-medium deep carbonate reservoirs: A case study of Feixianguan-Changxing Formations in Puguang Gas Field

open access: yesYouqi dizhi yu caishoulu
The carbonate reservoir in Puguang Gas Field has the characteristics of large burial depth, developed reef-flat facies, poor matrix properties, widespread development of natural fractures, and strong heterogeneity.

Microstructure Modification of Additively Manufactured Mo–9Si–8B by Annealing and Its Effects on High‐Temperature Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Postbuild annealing systematically modifies the phase fractions and morphology of EB‐PBF processed Mo–9Si–8B. Quantitative microstructure–property correlations reveal how controlled phase evolution enhances high‐temperature compressive strength and creep resistance.

Investigating the Effect of Inclination Angle and the Influence of Scan Parameters on the Appearance and Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Filigree Tension Rods of LPBF‐Manufactured NiTi Shape‐Memory Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article investigates the dependence of the properties on the manufacturing orientation in the form of the inclination angle to the build plate of LPBF‐fabricated NiTi rods with a diameter of 150–220 µm. Metallographic, chemical, thermal, and mechanical characterization show behavior under identical manufacturing conditions that ranges from ...
