Roughness of fracture surfaces in numerical models and laboratory experiments [PDF]
Abstract. We investigate the influence of stress conditions during fracture formation on the geometry and roughness of fracture surfaces. Rough fracture surfaces have been generated in numerical simulations of triaxial deformation experiments using the discrete element method and in a small number of laboratory experiments on limestone and sandstone ...

Numerical Modelling of Proppant Transport in Hydraulic Fractures
The distribution of proppant injected in hydraulic fractures significantly affects the fracture conductivity and well performance. The proppant transport in thin fracturing fluid used during hydraulic fracturing in the unconventional reservoirs is considerably different from fracturing fluids in the conventional reservoir due to the very low viscosity ...

Numerical modeling of fractures interaction for EGS
Geothermal energy is a promising source of clean renewable energy that does not depend on weather conditions and has the potential of providing base load as well as peaking electrical supply. During the last twenty years, application of the geothermal energy for electricity generation, heating and cooling have increased noticeably in many countries ...

Numerical modeling of thermally-induced fractures in a large rock salt mass
Numerical modeling of thermally-induced fractures is a concern for many geo-structures including deep underground energy storage caverns. In this paper, we present the numerical simulation of a large-scale cooling experiment performed in an underground ...

Numerical modelling of hydraulic fracturing [PDF]
In this paper we present a numerical model for hydraulic fracturing purposes. The rock formation is modelled as a poroelastic material based on Biot’s Theory. A fracture is represented in a discrete manner using the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM). The fluid flow is governed by a local mass balance.
