Weighted gene co-expression network analysis of nitrogen (N)-responsive genes and the putative role of G-quadruplexes in N use efficiency (NUE) in rice

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2023
Rice is an important target to improve crop nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE), and the identification and shortlisting of the candidate genes are still in progress.

Microbiology Combined with the Root Metabolome Reveals the Responses of Root Microorganisms to Maize Cultivars under Different Forms of Nitrogen Supply

open access: yesAgronomy
Plant–microbe interactions are key to nutrient-use efficiency. Root microbes are influenced by rhizosphere soil and plant cultivars. The impact of cultivar-by-nitrogen (N) interactions on the maize-root microbiome remains unclear, yet it is crucial for ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Rhizosphere-associated bacterial and fungal communities of two maize hybrids under increased nitrogen fertilization

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
IntroductionThe selection and application of nitrogen-efficient maize hybrids have significantly bolstered contemporary food security. Nevertheless, the effects of heightened nitrogen fertilizer demand of these crops on the composition and assembly of ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Positive influence of chicken manure mixed with former food products and vegetable waste on black soldier fly larval performance, frass maturity and environmental emissions

open access: yesChemical and Biological Technologies in Agriculture
Background Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) can convert chicken manure into biomass. However, a single chicken manure substrate leads to low efficiency and more emissions due to nutrient imbalance. This study aimed to investigate differences in conversion

Metabolomics Analysis of Phenolic Composition and Content in Five Pear Cultivars Leaves

open access: yesPlants
Phenolic compounds are the predominant chemical constituents in the secondary metabolites of plants and are commonly found in pears. In this study, we focused on the analysis of the phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of leaves from five pear ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Silicon application improves tomato yield and nutritional quality

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
Background Silicon (Si) is a beneficial nutrient well-known for its functions in enhancing plant resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. How Si application affects tomato yield and quality and underlying physiological mechanisms remain largely unclear.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.
