Current technologies for nutrient recovery in aquaponic systems: a review

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems
Aquaponic systems are integrated food production systems that recycle nutrients through the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. Nutrient recovery in aquaponic systems faces major challenges such as imbalances in nutrients, inefficiencies in ...

Nutrient supply from organic amendments applied to unvegetated soil, lettuce and orchardgrass [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Organic sources of nutrients are increasingly being used in horticultural and certified organic production. The nutrient-supplying potentials of poultry manure compost (PM), feather meal (FM), alfalfa meal (AA) and vermicastings (VC) and an unamended ...

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

Fate of micronutrients and heavy metals in digestate processing using vibrating reversed osmosis as resource recovery technology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This study aims to evaluate the full-scale performance of vibrating membrane filtration (VSEP) technology in resource recovery from the liquid fraction of digestates, while reducing macronutrient concentrations down to dischargeable water.

Biodegradable Polymers for Plant Nutrient Delivery and Recovery

open access: yesMacromolecular Bioscience
AbstractThe current use of fertilizers is inefficient and not sustainable. The majority of the fertilizer applied does not reach the targeted crop but is lost in the water bodies and into the atmosphere, with harmful impact on the environment. To enhance the efficiency and sustainability of current agricultural practices, it is essential to address two

Rational Fine‐Tuning of MOF Pore Metrics: Enhanced SO2 Capture and Sensing with Optimal Multi‐Site Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A pore tuning strategy to amplify the multi‐site MOF‐SO2 interactions is proposed to achieve an enhanced trace SO2 capture and chemiresistive sensing in highly stable isostructural DMOFs by annelating benzene rings. This work provides a facile strategy to achieve tailor‐made stable MOF materials for specific multifunctional applications.

Application of Calcium Peroxide for Methane Mitigation in Paddy Fields: Effects of Milk Vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) Incorporation

open access: yesAgriculture
Addressing the pressing issue of global warming, sustainable rice cultivation strategies are crucial. Milk vetch (MV), a common green manure in paddies, has been shown to increase CH4 emissions, necessitating effective mitigation.

A pore-scale model for permeable biofilm: numerical simulations and laboratory experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this paper we derive a pore-scale model for permeable biofilm formation in a two-dimensional pore. The pore is divided in two phases: water and biofilm.

Biodegradable and Recyclable Luminescent Mixed‐Matrix‐Membranes, Hydrogels, and Cryogels based on Nanoscale Metal‐Organic Frameworks and Biopolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents biodegradable and recyclable mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs), hydrogels, and cryogels using luminescent nanoscale metal‐organic frameworks (nMOFs) and biopolymers. These bio‐nMOF‐MMMs combine europium‐based nMOFs as probes for the status of the materials with the biopolymers agar and gelatine and present alternatives to conventional ...

Development of forest structure and leaf area in secondary forests regenerating on abandoned pastures in Central Amazonia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The area of secondary forest (SF) regenerating from pastures is increasing in the Amazon basin; however, the return of forest and canopy structure following abandonment is not well understood. This study examined the development of leaf area index (LAI),
