Some key advances occurred last year in understanding mechanisms involved in nutrient absorption. A novel "prechylomicron transport vesicle" was identified; its movement to the Golgi is the rate-limiting step for triacylglycerol absorption. A scavenger receptor (type BI) in the brush border membrane appears to facilitate cholesterol uptake.

Nutrient efficiency along nutrient availability gradients
Oecologia, 1999The validity of nutrient use efficiency as a central concept in ecosystem ecology has recently been subject to challenge based upon arguments over autocorrelation of data, interpretation of graphical approaches, and appropriate statistical analyses. Much of the confusion on the measurement and interpretation of nutrient use efficiency results from the ...

Nutrients, bioactive non-nutrients and anti-nutrients in potatoes
Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, 2009Globally, potatoes account for only about 2% of the food energy supply, yet they are the predominant staple for many countries. In developed countries, potatoes account for 540 kJ (130 kcal) per person per day, while in developing countries, it is only 170 kJ (42 kcal) per person per day.

Because it is ultimately dispersed back to space as heat, energy flows in only one direction through an ecosystem. In contrast, the materials from which living matter is fashioned are in constant circulation back and forth between plants and animals and the non-living environment.

Interactions of Non-Nutrients with Nutrients
2015An extensive literature review discusses the effect of nutrient intakes on the action of non-nutrients, and vice-versa. The topics are arranged in 28 nutrient sections which can contain up to 17 non-nutrient groups. Included are a synopsis of the actual status of research; generalizations; and directions for future research.

Methods for determining bioavailability and bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds and nutrients
Innovative Thermal and Non-Thermal Processing, Bioaccessibility and Bioavailability of Nutrients and Bioactive Compounds, 2019The health advantages of bioactive compounds and nutrients are based on intake levels and the amount of these compounds that become bioavailable and bioaccessible.
