Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Medical Nutrition Therapy for Women with Gestational Diabetes: Current Practice and Future Perspectives. [PDF]

open access: yesNutrients
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a complication that affects 20% of pregnancies worldwide. It is associated with adverse short- and long-term cardiometabolic outcomes for both mother and infant.

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified

Food Allergen-Specific Substitutive Diet as a Proposed Tool for Adverse Reactions to Foodstuffs Management: The ALASKA Study

open access: yesProceedings
The prevalence of adverse reactions to foodstuffs (ARFS), such as food allergy (FA) and food intolerance (FI), has been increasing worldwide during the past decades. Currently, strict food allergen avoidance is the principal recommended treatment of ARFS.

Influence of nutritional status on postoperative outcome in patients with colorectal cancer – the emerging role of the microbiome

open access: yesInnovative Surgical Sciences, 2017
Many patients with colorectal cancer are overweight. Even then, nutritional status is a frequently underestimated risk factor for perioperative complications.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Is there a rationale for perioperative nutrition therapy in the times of ERAS?

open access: yesInnovative Surgical Sciences, 2019
In order to increase patient compliance in Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) programs, assessment and monitoring of functional and nutritional status should be routinely performed.

From guidelines to clinical practice: a roadmap for oncologists for nutrition therapy for cancer patients

open access: yesTherapeutic Advances in Medical Oncology, 2019
Tackling malnutrition in cancer patients remains one of the most challenging tasks in clinical practice. Even though robust evidence exists stressing the role of nutritional status in relation to treatment outcome, its appropriate consideration in ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...
