Scuffing as a factor in the design of nylon gears

Abstract In meshing gears various phenomena have been observed, all of which can lead to a breakdown of the transmission. A number of these phenomena, such as tooth rupture, wear, pitting and scuffing, also occur in nylon gears. Scuffing in gears can be ascribed to local overheating caused by friction between the flanks of engaging teeth.
