クレゾールを水素加圧下に種々の触媒とともに450~500℃ に加熱すると,脱メチルして相当量のフェノールを生成する。実験結果にもっとも大きく影響すると思われる反応温度と反応時間の均一保持に注意してo-クレゾールを脱アルキルして,フェノール収率と,触媒の種類,反応温度および含水率との関係を検討した。用いた触媒は,アルミナまたは軽石を担体とする触媒,シリカ-アルミナ型触媒など19種類で,実験の結果,コバルト-シリカ,活性アルミナおよび酸化バナジウム-軽石が有効であった。フェノールの最高収率は500℃,含水率0で酸化バナジウム- 軽石で処理した場合の43.8wt%(究極収率)であった。また各触媒の反応機構の特性について考察を加えた。
