Many gram-negative bacteria utilize contact-dependent growth inhibition (CDI) systems to introduce toxic effector proteins into neighboring cells, thereby outcompeting them. In CDI+ strains, CdiA effector proteins, carrying C-terminal toxin (CT) domains, are delivered into target cells through receptor-mediated pathways.
