A Population Genetic Model of Evolution of Host-Mate Attraction and Nonhost Repulsion in a Bark Beetle Pityogenes bidentatus

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, 2012
Studies have shown that the bark beetle Pityogenes bidentatus (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) avoids volatiles of nonhost trees (Norway Spruce, birch, and oak) and healthy host Scotch Pine when orienting to aggregation pheromone.

Influence du bois sur certaines substances odorantes des vins

open access: yesOENO One, 1998
L'élevage des vins en barriques modifie profondément leur expression aromatique. L'étude par chromatographie en phase gazeuse et spectrométrie de masse permet d'identifier plusieurs substances volatiles appartenant à la fraction phénolique des arômes ...

From mainland to islands: the evolution of resistance and tolerance to herbivory in long‐lived oaks

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Island biogeography theory predicts that island plants should exhibit reduced defences compared with their mainland relatives due to relaxed herbivory pressure. However, growing empirical evidence challenges this prediction, revealing substantial variation among systems, plant lineages and defence types.

Mechanically robust biochar‐modified polystyrene foam with enhanced flame retardancy using halogen‐free additives

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
Halogen‐free biocomposite polystyrene foams were fabricated via pilot‐scale supercritical CO2 extrusion using expandable graphite, melamine polyphosphate, biochar, and recycled polymer. The optimized formulation exhibited refined cellular morphology, enhanced flame retardancy (limiting oxygen index of 25%, rapid self‐extinguishing), and improved ...

Multi-stress interaction effects on BVOC emission fingerprints from Oak and Beech: A cross-investigation using Machine Learning and Positive Matrix Factorization [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences
Forest ecosystems are increasingly stressed through heatwaves, drought periods, and other factors such as ozone pollution or insect infestations. These stressors have a profound impact on the emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) from ...

Invasive goldfish trigger a regime shift in experimental lake ecosystems of varying trophic state

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
The pet trade distributes exotic animals around the globe that enrich human lives. However, some pets become pests when released into the wild. This study provides experimental evidence that goldfish will negatively affect native freshwater organisms and ecosystems.

Warm Spring Weather Alters Calling Phenology of Four Sympatric Early‐Breeding Anurans

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
An unusually warm March in 2024 (“false spring”) followed by freezing temperatures allowed us to assess the impact of a weather event on an amphibian community. The calling activity of all four species was associated with increasing temperature, and the first date of calling was advanced by 11–18 days.

What Was ‘Middle Australia’? Social Categorisation and Political Positioning in the Late‐20th Century

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Politics &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT ‘Middle Australia’ became a ubiquitous term of social categorisation and political positioning during the latter decades of the 20th century. This article examines how this concept was variously used in the metropolitan print media in the guises of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age of Melbourne, including in their reporting of federal and ...
