9 Journal of Telecommunications and High Technology Law 421 (2011)What is the difference between "James Grimmelmann" and "@grimmelm" and why should we care? Some computer systems, like Facebook and credit reporting agencies, are inherently "about" people. Others are not.

Objects are the fundamental building blocks of an object-oriented (OO) system. Just as you learned in Chapter 2 that abstraction involves producing a model of the real world, you’ll see in this chapter that objects are “mini abstractions” of the various real-world components that comprise such a model.

Many modern programming languages now support the object-oriented paradigm. Object orientation is an alternative way of designing and implementing programs. Within the object-oriented paradigm, programmers model things known as classes and then use these within a program by creating instances of these classes known as objects. PHP supports the creation

In this chapter we will introduce a new way of reusing code through classes. We give a brief overview of classes and will talk about objects (class instances) and manipulations with those.

You’ve now seen quite a lot of Java. You’ve seen how to create a class and how to create instances of the class (objects), and how to use these objects in very simple programs. This has all been a bit informal, though, so the time has come to have a proper look and to get some practice in writing your own programs.

In R, objects belong to classes as well as modes and types. Classes tell something about how an object is structured. S3 and S4 differ with regard to classes. In S3, there are specific classes into which an R objects falls. In S4, the user defines a class for an S4 object.
