The Promise of Solid Lubricants for a Sustainable Future

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Lubricants are vital for technology, saving energy and resources. The industry seeks sustainable solutions beyond fossil fuels. Solid lubricants offer extremely low friction and reduce environmental impact, especially in harsh conditions. Can these solids truly replace liquid lubricants, or are they limited to extreme applications?

TeV radiation from the Crab nebula and other matters [PDF]

open access: yes
The detection of the Crab Nebula via the Cherenkov imaging technique places TeV astronomy on a secure observational footing. The motivation for TeV observations, a discussion of the atmospheric Cherenkov technique, the experimental details of the Crab ...

Astronomical tests for quantum black hole structure

open access: yes, 2017
Quantum modifications to black holes on scales comparable to the horizon size, or even more radical physics, are apparently needed to reconcile the existence of black holes with the principles of quantum mechanics.

Probing student understanding of scientific thinking in the context of introductory astrophysics

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Physics Education Research, 2009
Common forms of testing of student understanding of science content can be misleading about their understanding of the nature of scientific thinking. Observational astronomy integrated with related ideas of force and motion is a rich context to explore ...

Dimensionally Resolved Nanostructures of an Atomically Precise and Optically Active 1D van der Waals Helix

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The ability to grow nanostructures based on inorganic helical crystals with long‐range order will enable a platform to realize physical states that arise from chirality. Herein, it is demonstrated that controlled vapor phase deposition of an atomically precise helical crystal, GaSI, into ultrathin 1D nanowires and quasi‐2D nanoribbons.

Resonant Interlayer Coupling in NbSe2‐Graphite Epitaxial Moiré Superlattices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Combining angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory derived calculations, this work reveals strong interlayer coupling and moiré replicas of the graphite π states in molecular‐beam epitaxy grown van der Waals heterostructures of monolayer‐NbSe2/graphite, with implications for its collective phases that form. Abstract Moiré

Ultrafast Terahertz Field Control of the Emergent Magnetic and Electronic Interactions at Oxide Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Intense single‐cycle THz electric‐field pulses enable ultrafast control of emergent electronic and magnetic states at LaNiO3/CaMnO3 interfaces. Combined X‐ray and optical probes reveal sub‐picosecond demagnetization driven by spin‐polarized currents and slower magnetoelastic dynamics linked to spin–lattice coupling.

VHE gamma-ray astronomy: observations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2006
The recent operation of a new generation of Cherenkov telescopes is providing unprecedented results which are opening in the last months a truly new age in VHE cosmic gamma-ray observations. We're in the down of the setting of a new window in our observation of the cosmos: VHE gamma-ray astronomy.
