Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

Reliability and agreement of root length measurements during orthodontic treatment in images from different CBCT machines using multiplanar reconstruction

open access: yesBiomaterial Investigations in Dentistry
Objectives: To assess inter- and intrarater reliability and agreement for measurements of root lengths using multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examinations.

On Measuring the Variation of High Energy Cut-off in Active Galactic Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The variation in the high energy cut-off E_c in active galactic nuclei uniquely probes the corona physics. In this work we show that the ratio of two NuSTAR spectra (in analogy to difference imaging technique widely used in astronomy) is uniquely useful in studying E_c variations.

Attracting Interest: Dynamic Displays of Proceptivity Increase the Attractiveness of Men and Women [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Proceptive signals may influence judgments of opposite-sex attractiveness because these signals indicate high mate quality and/or non-threatening behavior but they may also signal high probable rate of return for mating effort.

Unraveling Mycobacterium tuberculosis acid resistance and pH homeostasis mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis exhibits a remarkable resilience to acid stress. In this Review, we discuss some of the molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways used by the tubercle bacilli to adapt and resist host‐mediated acid stress. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a successful pathogen that has developed a variety of strategies to survive and ...

The potential impact of CT-MRI matching on tumor volume delineation in advanced head and neck cancer [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
To study the potential impact of the combined use of CT and MRI scans on the Gross Tumor Volume (GTV) estimation and interobserver variation. Four observers outlined the GTV in six patients with advanced head and neck cancer on CT, axial MRI, and coronal

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Blazar Anti-Sequence of Spectral Variation within individual Blazars: Cases for Mrk 501 and 3C 279

open access: yes, 2013
The jet properties of Mrk 501 and 3C 279 are derived by fitting the broadband spectral energy distributions with the lepton models. The derived gamma_b (the break Lorenz factor of the electron distribution) are 10^4-10^6 for Mrk 501 and 200~600 for 3C ...

A new method for improved standardisation in three-dimensional computed tomography cephalometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Interest for three-dimensional computed tomography cephalometry has risen over the last two decades. Current methods commonly rely on the examiner to manually point-pick the landmarks and/or orientate the skull. In this study, a new approach is presented,

The power of microRNA regulation—insights into immunity and metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
MicroRNAs are emerging as crucial regulators at the intersection of metabolism and immunity. This review examines how miRNAs coordinate glucose and lipid metabolism while simultaneously modulating T‐cell development and immune responses. Moreover, it highlights how cutting‐edge artificial intelligence applications can identify miRNA biomarkers ...
