Biogeography of the Oceans

open access: yes, 2020
Abstract This chapter summarizes global patterns and mechanisms of both ecological and historical crustacean biogeography resulting in the contemporary species distributions described over the past decades. In the pelagic realm, hydrographic features such as ocean currents, physical depth profiles, and latitudinal temperature gradients ...

Heterointerface Engineering of Bismuth Nanosheets/Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon Nanoleaves Enables High‑Performance Electrochemical Dechlorination

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Bismuth nanosheets integrated with nitrogen‐doped carbon nanoleaves are constructed via a 2D‐on‐2D heterointerface engineering strategy. The resulting BiNS/NCL electrode delivers high chloride adsorption capacity, fast kinetics, and stable cyclability. A built‐in electric field at the heterointerface promotes chloride electrosorption and stabilizes the

Long Time No Ocean

open access: yesLateral, 2014
Words on flagging banners are cut out, with letters left hanging; phrases like “Long Time No Ocean” become difficult to read. Language here functions in dual ways as both a communicative tool and an evocative form.

A Universal Approach to Enhancing Silicon Hot‐Carrier Photodetectors for CMOS‐Compatible SWIR Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Silicon hot‐carrier photodetectors offer a CMOS‐compatible pathway for SWIR detection but suffer from intrinsically low quantum efficiency. Here, we introduce a quasi‐generalized antireflection coating (QARC) that universally enhances optical absorption and quantum efficiency, enabling the first CMOS‐compatible SWIR imaging with silicon hot‐carrier ...

Trawling Through the Five Gyres: A Microplastic Research Study

open access: yesCurrent: The Journal of Marine Education
Plastic pollution is a major problem in the world’s oceans (Hale et al., 2020). It is estimated that 10–28 billion pounds of trash entered the oceans in 2010 alone (Jambeck et al., 2015). This plastic is mostly microplastics, or plastic bits smaller than

Natural Resistance to Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome in Estrildid Finches Reveals Macrophage GPR183 as a Potential Therapeutic Target

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ovarian macrophage depletion reverses OHSS resistance in estrildid finches and exacerbates OHSS symptoms in rats. Activating macrophage GPR183 alleviates OHSS by reducing pro‐inflammatory factors, increasing immunomodulatory molecules, remodeling CD44/SDC4‐mediated communication, and restoring immune homeostasis.

MONICEPH project: Monitoring cephalopods during whale-watching activity in the Azores (2020-2024) [PDF]

open access: yesBiodiversity Data Journal
The study of oceanic cephalopods off the Azores Archipelago began decades ago with the analysis of stomach contents from sperm whales that were hunted for the whaling industry.
