Stratospheric Circulation in the Southern Hemisphere: Links to Tropical Winds, Ozone, and the Hunga Eruption—Part 1: Evidence From ERA5 Reanalysis

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract The interannual variability of the Southern Hemisphere polar vortex plays a key role in ozone depletion and recovery but this variability and its teleconnection patterns are less understood than in the Northern Hemisphere. Using ERA5 reanalysis data from 1980 to 2022 (43 years), we studied the variability of the Southern Hemisphere vortex by ...

Million‐Year Scale Hydrothermal and Hydrocarbon Evolution Hosted Within Stratified Thermohydraulic Systems in Sedimented Ultraslow‐Spreading Settings, Svyatogor and Vestnesa Ridges

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract Hydrothermal systems at ultraslow‐spreading ridges are poorly understood, especially where thick sediments overlay detachment faults. The International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 403 obtained the longest sediment record in Atlantic‐Arctic ultraslow‐spreading systems, reaching ∼628 m below the seafloor.

Symbiont‐Mediated Molybdenum Cycling Shapes Coral Skeletal Mo Isotopes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract Coral skeletal trace‐metal compositions are commonly assumed to derive from seawater, yet the extent to which biological processes contribute remains poorly constrained. Here we present the first paired Mo isotope measurements of coral tissue, symbiotic zooxanthellae, and skeleton.

Interhemispheric Stratospheric Symmetry: Seasonal Precursors to Surface Extratropical Variability

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract Seasonal prediction of surface climate relies on influences external to the troposphere, of which the stratosphere is a key source. The October stratosphere is particularly important for predictability of the coming winter and summer seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere respectively, as the seasonal transition in zonal winds creates
