Estimating upper ocean heat content in the North Atlantic Ocean with the NOAA next-generation enterprise ocean heat content algorithm

2022
On average, a tropical cyclone (TC) making landfall in the United States causes an estimated $19 billion in damage. The over-ocean intensification of TCs can bring stronger winds and greater rainfall to land areas, making them even more dangerous and costly.

Warm pool ocean heat content regulates ocean–continent moisture transport

Nature, 2022
The Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) exerts a dominant role in global climate by releasing huge amounts of water vapour and latent heat to the atmosphere and modulating upper ocean heat content (OHC), which has been implicated in modern climate change1. The long-term variations of IPWP OHC and their effect on monsoonal hydroclimate are, however, not fully

Heat Content and Temperature of the Ocean

2012
The global ocean is a vast body of water covering approximately two thirds of Earth’s surface and having an average depth around 4,000 m. Temperatures in the ocean can range from a balmy 30°C in the surface layers of the tropics to an icy cold −2°C in polar regions and at abyssal depths.

Physical Processes Governing Ocean Heat Content Variability

2022
This thesis summarizes the research program of the XXXIV PhD cycle of Uni versity of Rome Tor Vergata, falling within the European Union Project Copernicus Climate Change Service C3S_511: Quality Assessment of Essential Climate Variable (ECV) Products.

Variations of Oceanic Heat Content

2014
Variations in global and regional ocean heat content occur both due to natural variability and external forcing of the climate system. While regional patterns can be dominated by natural variations on decadal timescales, globally integrated ocean heat content responds primarily to external forcings such as anthropogenic global warming and major ...

Rising heat content of Earth’s oceans

Physics Today, 2017
An improved estimate revises upward the rate at which Earth’s oceans are sequestering excess heat. An improved estimate revises upward the rate at which Earth’s oceans are sequestering excess heat.

Ocean heat content and Earth's radiation imbalance

Physics Letters A, 2009
Earth’s radiation imbalance is determined from ocean heat content data and compared with results of direct measurements. Distinct time intervals of alternating positive and negative values are found: 1960– mid-1970s (−0.15), mid-1970s–2000 (+0.15), 2001–present (−0.2 W/m 2 ), and are consistent with prior reports.

Intraseasonal variations of Ocean Heat Content in the tropical Indian and Pacific Ocean

2021
<p>The ocean heat content (OHC) is an important thermodynamical parameter in the Earth’s climate system as about 90% of the Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI) is stored in the ocean. It is therefore important to understand how this quantity varies on different timescales and how different thermodynamical and ...

Upper ocean heat content in the Nordic seas

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2009
Seven years of temperature profiles are obtained from the Argo float project and are used to study the vertically integrated heat content for the Nordic seas which is broken up into the Norwegian Basin, Greenland Sea, Lofoten region, and Iceland Plateau. The World Ocean Atlas 2005 (WOA05) is used as the climatological baseline for temperature and hence

A Prototype for Remote Monitoring of Ocean Heat Content

2020
A new approach to monitor ocean heat content (OHC) is proposed to overcome challenges with observing OHC over the entire ocean. The output of an ocean state estimate (ECCO) is sampled along historical hydrographic transects, a machine learning algorithm (GAM) is trained on these samples, and OHC is estimated everywhere using information inferable from ...
