Estimating the economic benefits of regional ocean observing systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We develop a methodology to estimate the potential economic benefits from new investments in regional coastal ocean observing systems in US waters, and apply this methodology to generate preliminary estimates of such benefits.

Benchmarking Coaxial and Angular Optical Emission Spectroscopy With Recommendations for Reliable Compositional In Situ Monitoring During Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Real‐time insight into local chemistry is critical for reliable part quality in additive manufacturing, especially laser powder bed fusion (PBF‑LB/M), where rapid thermal cycles and localized evaporation can undermine part performance. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) offers non‑intrusive, in situ plume monitoring, but detection geometry ...

Ship-Based Contributions to Global Ocean, Weather, and Climate Observing Systems

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
The role ships play in atmospheric, oceanic, and biogeochemical observations is described with a focus on measurements made near the ocean surface. Ships include merchant and research vessels; cruise liners and ferries; fishing vessels; coast guard ...

Tunable‐Threshold UV Dosimetry With Programmable Luminescent Tags via Oxygen‐Mediated Room‐Temperature Phosphorescence

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A fully organic UV threshold dosimeter is developed by exploiting the oxygen‐sensitive room‐temperature phosphorescence of a purely organic emitter in a polymer matrix. Upon reaching a specific cumulative UV dose, photochemical oxygen depletion triggers a sharp, high‐contrast emission.

The Potential Economic Benefits of Integrated and Sustainable Ocean Observation Systems: The Southeast Atlantic Region [PDF]

open access: yes
The South East Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing System (SEACOOS) collects, manages and disseminates coastal oceanic and atmospheric observation information along the Atlantic coast of the southeastern United States.

Isolating the signal of ocean global warming [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Identifying the signature of global warming in the world's oceans is challenging because low frequency circulation changes can dominate local temperature changes.

Direct Measurement of the Singlet Lifetime and Photoexcitation Behavior of the Boron Vacancy Center in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Negatively charged boron vacancy defects in hexagonal boron nitride promise near‐surface quantum sensing, but their internal spin transition rates are only partly understood. This work directly measures the defect's singlet‐state lifetime, 15(3) ns, using a nanosecond rise‐time dual‐pulse photoluminescence‐recovery method, and shows that high laser ...

Applying OGC sensor web enablement to ocean observing systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The complexity of marine installations for ocean observing systems has grown significantly in recent years. In a network consisting of tens, hundreds or thousands of marine instruments, manual configuration and integration becomes very challenging ...

Naphthyridine‐Based Donor–Acceptor Boron Difluoride Complexes Targeting Red Emission in Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Four donor–acceptor boron difluoride complexes based on triphenylamine donor and a naphthyridine acceptor units were synthesized, studied, and applied as OLED emitters. They exhibit pronounced intramolecular charge transfer character, balanced charge transport properties, and tunable emission. Near‐unity PLQYs are achieved for selected compounds, while
