Decadal‐scale drivers of South Pacific hydroclimate variability

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Using prescribed SST perturbations in the IGCM4 model, we investigate the mechanisms by which three major modes of low‐frequency climate variability—the IPO, AMV, and Southern Ocean SST‐driven midlatitude jet shifts—modulate the South Pacific hydroclimate.

Improving heavy precipitation forecasts through phase‐aware nonlinear bias correction of all‐sky infrared radiances using cloud top temperature differences

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study proposes a phase‐aware bias correction framework for all‐sky infrared radiance assimilation. Cloud top temperature differences between observations and model background fields are used to identify cloud‐phase mismatch and cold‐cloud regimes.

Satellite radiance observation error inflation and spatial thinning: Reconciling idealized theory with near‐operational applications

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Satellite radiance observations are spatially thinned using a grid‐based selection that retains one representative profile per cell. When observation errors are spatially correlated but treated as uncorrelated in the assimilation system, reducing thinning increases their influence, leading to overfitting and reduced analysis fit with other observations.

Combining wind and rain in spaceborne scatterometer observations: modelling the splash effects in the sea surface backscattering coefficient

open access: yes, 2015
Scatterometer wind retrievals are widely used by the oceanographic and meteorological communities for several applications. However, rain strongly affects such wind retrievals, especially at Ku band and higher frequencies. Although several semi-empirical

Characteristics of quasi‐stationary band‐shaped precipitation systems in Japan between 1989 and 2022

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
(a) Annual occurrence frequency of QBPSs (green bars), five‐years moving average (blue line), and regression trend (red line) for 1989–2022. (b) Distribution of the geographical occurrence frequencies of QBPSs with a 5‐km resolution for 1989–2022. Quasi‐stationary band‐shaped precipitation systems (QBPSs) are a major cause of localized heavy rainfall ...

Relationships between dryline intensity, deep moist convection and regional circulation over interior southern Africa

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We explore the relationship between dryline intensity, convective activity, and the regional circulation over southern Africa during summer by comparing weak and strong convective drylines with each other. We find that strong drylines result in stronger convection with up to 3.6 times more lightning strokes adjacent to the dryline than on weak dryline ...

Linear System Identification and Control of a Low‐Cost High‐Performance Omnidirectional Marine Surface Vehicle for Swarming Applications

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Marine operations traditionally rely on human intervention, a costly and disruptive method. Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) offer a powerful alternative, capable of operating autonomously, for extended periods, and with various sensors for various missions.
